With so many options, it can be difficult to know where to start. We recommend starting with the resource you trust most: your university! Many universities have a page dedicated just to scholarship opportunities for students, and some even have their own funds that they will draw from when providing tuition breaks.

Searching through all of your university’s programs can help narrow down your search and give you a good sense of what is out there. You may find that you already qualify for funding—without having to apply at all! The information on these pages is likely to be more reliable than websites that list several different scholarships in one place because universities don’t want applicants getting false information or false hope about their funding opportunities.

Even if none of the scholarships provided by your university are right for you, studying them will help guide you in deciding which applications are worth pursuing—and which aren’t. The process of applying for scholarships requires a lot of time and energy, so it is important to focus on the ones that actually fit with what you need and what kind of student you are.

Once you’ve found one or two charities relevant to you, contact them directly and ask if they offer awards to international students.

In addition to the above, there are millions of private scholarships that are provided by individuals and organizations worldwide. Many of these scholarships are not well-known, or advertised on a broad scale; however, they can be found if you’re resourceful and determined enough. If you have time to spare on thorough research, we recommend using the following methods to find new scholarship opportunities:

• Use Google search queries for a particular scholarship (for example: “stipendium hungaricum 2022” instead of just “scholarship in hungary”)
• Search for niche types of scholarships (for example: “women’s scholarship” or “muslim scholarship”)
• Visit relevant social media groups (LinkedIn is usually a good place)

Here are some examples:

• Erasmus+ is the EU’s flagship education and training programme to support projects, partnerships, events and mobility in Europe. It helps fund scholarships for students at European universities. Check out the UK National Agency website for opportunities relating to your subject area, country or language skills.
• The British Council and Universities UK jointly run Generating Genius, a scheme that provides access to university-level education in science, technology and engineering subjects to young people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds who face economic disadvantage. There are scholarships available for talented candidates studying at any stage of their university degree (bachelors or masters). You will need good A-Levels or equivalent qualifications as well as great communication skills in English (IELTS 6.5), leadership potential and an interest in pursuing a career in science, technology or engineering (STEM).
