Boston College is a private Jesuit Catholic research university located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It is the third-oldest higher education institution in the United States, and the first Jesuit and Catholic university in New England. The college offers more than 90 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations; 22 graduate programs; 26 doctoral programs; 20 master’s degree programs; and 1 certificate program.

The school has produced three Nobel laureates: George Akerlof (2001), Joseph Stiglitz (2001) and Robert Mundell (1999). In 2018, Boston College was ranked by Bloomberg as one of America’s 25 most expensive colleges for out-of-state students.[8] For its 2019 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Boston College as tied for 45th among national universities with a student body consisting of over 15% international students.[9] In addition to being recognized by U.S News & World Report as one of America’s Best Colleges,[10] The Princeton Review also included Boston College on its list of “Best 379 Colleges” for 2019,[11] which recognizes institutions that “provide an outstanding academic experience at an affordable price.”

Academic Requirements

• 3.0 GPA or higher
• 1250 SAT (out of 1600) or higher
• 27 ACT (out of 36) or higher

These numbers are the minimum college admissions requirements that you need to meet, but they should be used as guidelines only. In addition to meeting these standards, students who want to attend Boston College must also demonstrate good preparation for their chosen field of study by showing proficiency in relevant subjects and grades that show steady improvement over time.

High School Requirements

Boston College recommends that you take the following courses in high school:

• 4 units of English (composition and literature)
• 3 units of mathematics, including algebra I and II or a higher level course
• 3 or more units of science, including biology and chemistry. You may choose to complete this requirement within your required credits for math/science/social science if you are taking both Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses for credit. If not, you should take an additional year-long laboratory science course such as chemistry or physics.

Standardized Testing

To be considered for admission to Boston College, you must submit your SAT or ACT scores. You can also submit SAT Subject Tests and AP Exams if you are a high school student.

If you’re an international student, you’ll need to take the TOEFL or IELTS exam instead of the SAT or ACT.

The Writing Sample

The writing sample is a piece of writing submitted as part of your application. It should be written on a topic of your choice, but you should note that the style, tone and syntax of your writing should reflect the type of writing that you would do in college.

The Writing Sample can be an essay or short story, play or poem. Your instructor will tell you what kind of essay to write: an argumentative essay; a narrative organic development; a research paper; or another type of assignment required for entry into college.

Auditions and Portfolios

At Boston College, auditions and portfolios are required for admission to the undergraduate programs in Art History and Studio Art. We’ll look at the process for both in this section, but first a brief word about the application process in general:

• There is no primary application for our undergraduate programs; rather, you will apply directly to individual departments (e.g., Studio Art).
• Each department has its own requirements for submitting your portfolio or audition materials. Please note that each faculty member who reviews your work will have his or her own expectations as to what constitutes a complete submission. You should review their guidelines carefully before preparing any materials to submit with your application package.

Interviews

Interviews are an important part of the application process. The interviewers will ask you questions about your academic and extracurricular activities, interests, goals, personality and much more.

Interview questions are designed to give the interviewer a better understanding of who you are as an individual by asking you to share specific details of your life experiences. It is important that you prepare for each interview by thinking about what types of questions they may ask and practicing how you would respond.

Home-schooled Students

Boston College welcomes applications from home-schooled students, offering them the opportunity to apply for admission and financial aid.

To be considered for admission to Boston College, home-schooled students must submit the following:

• A transcript of work (sent directly from the school/teacher) that demonstrates high academic achievement in all subjects
• A letter of recommendation from an educator who knows you well (not required if you are applying to enter BC as a freshman or transfer student)
• An essay written by you on a topic of your choice (maximum 1,200 words; written response question format). The essay should demonstrate your ability to write clearly and concisely about personal experiences or observations within a specific context.
