6 You must be curious about the world and about people.
The first thing you should know about Cal Poly Pomona is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We have a lot of fun and we’re proud of it. But there’s also a lot more to our campus than just laughing and playing around. We think learning should be exciting, casual, and interesting. We believe that students learn best by doing things, not by being told how or what to do; so we want students who are curious about the world and want to learn more about themselves—and others—in every possible way.
You must be able to ask questions, seek answers and explore your own potential as well as that of others through collaboration with peers, professors and staff members at Cal Poly Pomona (and beyond).
We value curiosity above all else at this university because curiosity drives innovation; without it there would be no new technologies or fields of study emerging from academia every day!
7 Critical thinking skills are a vital part of every college education.
Critical thinking skills are a vital part of every college education. They help students make sense of the world, develop new ideas and perspectives, and improve their thought processes. Critical thinking is not just for college students; it’s an essential skill for life.
The College Board says that critical thinking “involves analyzing complex issues carefully, making reasoned judgments about them, and understanding how your ideas relate to those of other people.” If you want to be able to think critically during your time at Cal Poly Pomona, you will need to learn how to read carefully, how to analyze problems or situations in order to solve them effectively (and efficiently), how to search for information on your own when necessary—and then how to apply that information in a logical way toward solving the problem at hand.
To prepare yourself for this challenge as best possible before entering college-level coursework at Cal Poly Pomona (or any other university), consider taking one or more AP courses while still in high school. The College Board offers Advanced Placement courses in English language arts (reading/writing), English literature/composition; history: United States; biology; chemistry; physics B – C ; calculus AB/BC – AABB
