Texas Tech University does not accept the TOEFL MyBest TM Score.

Regarding Admission Requirements for Texas Tech University:

  • SAT scores must be sent electronically from the College Board, school code 6820. You may submit all scores from every SAT test you’ve taken if you wish, but we will only use the highest writing and critical reading score on a single test date. If you have taken the SAT more than once, it is recommended that you send your scores to Texas Tech University beginning Fall 2012 and after. We will not superscore between pre-March 2016 and March 2016 or beyond.
  • ACT scores must be sent electronically from the ACT, school code 4236. If you have taken the ACT more than once, it is recommended that you send your scores to Texas Tech University beginning Fall 2012 and after. We will not super-score between pre-September 2015 and September 2015 or beyond. Applicants may also request that official scores be sent directly from the testing agency (see information above).

Appeal Process

If you are a resident student and did not qualify for automatic admission, you may still apply for regular undergraduate admission as a non-automatic admit. Keep in mind that you will be competing with all other first time freshmen applicants. If you wish to appeal your decision, please complete and submit the Appeal of Admission Decision form along with required documentation. Your application will then be reviewed by an appeals committee and your admissions decision has been reconsidered based on additional information provided. Note: You must have applied for automatic admission before submitting an appeal form.

Community College Option

Students who do not meet automatic admission requirements may also choose to attend a participating community college in Texas where they can complete their first two years of coursework towards an associate’s degree from Texas Tech University through our Associate Degree Program (ADP). In order to participate in this program, students must: (1) Satisfy all ADP requirements set forth by their community college; (2) Meet minimum transfer student admission standards; and (3) Apply for transfer as an ADP student at least one semester prior to graduation from their community college. After completing these steps, students are guaranteed junior standing at Texas Tech University upon graduation from their local community college and successful completion of the ADP program’s curriculum requirements. Eligible degree-seeking transfer students will be automatically admitted if they:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Meet the 30-hour rule (see specific requirements below)
  • Are not subject to the 3/2 Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement or have already met this requirement at their previous college or university and can provide proof of exemption

To meet the 30-hour rule, students must:

  • Have completed at least 30 semester credit hours of transferable coursework (excluding developmental and technical courses) with no grade lower than a C; and
  • Have fewer than 45 semester credit hours of college-level coursework.

If you are transferring from an institution outside of Texas or you have less than 30 transferrable credit hours after high school graduation, you must also submit a final official high school transcript with your application. Your high school transcript should reflect an unweighted GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Note that scores are currently not required for admission to Texas Tech. If you submit an SAT score, your highest score for each subtest will be considered. If you submit an ACT score, your composite score will be used. Texas Tech University does not accept the TOEFL MyBest TM Score.

If you’re a freshman or new transfer to Texas Tech University, the following admission requirements must be met for you to qualify for admission. The specific requirements are as follows:

  • You must meet one of the following three criteria:
  • A high school graduate or GED recipient with an overall “C” average, who has successfully taken coursework equivalent to at least four years of English, two years of math, two years of science and two years of social science; or
  • Successfully earned 24 or more credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university with an overall GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; or
  • Earned an Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have maintained at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average out of 4.0.
  • Score in the top 50 percent on your SAT (reading/writing and mathematics) or ACT (English and mathematics). This requirement is not applicable if you have completed at least 24 college credit hours at an accredited institution with a GPA equal to 2.0 on a 4-point scale after receiving your high school diploma, GED certificate, etc., which meets our transfer requirements instead
