American Colleges That Play Rugby

Rugby is a fast-paced game that’s played by two teams of 15 players. Each team tries to score points by touching the ball down in their opponent’s end zone. Rugby is played on grass fields and has similarities to American football. The sport originated in England in 1823 and has since grown into an international phenomenon, with rugby sevens becoming an Olympic sport in 2016.

Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) is a NCAA Division I-A member school with an extensive history in rugby. The ASU Rugby Club has been around since 1959, and they play in the Pac-12 conference of USA Rugby. The club’s most notable achievement is their win at the 2010 Collegiate Rugby Championship—the highest profile college rugby tournament in America.

The team plays its home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

Boston College

Duke University Rugby Football Club (DURFC) is the oldest club sport at Duke University and the only club sport that has been around since the founding of the university in 1838. DURFC was founded in 1972 under the name “Duke Blue Devils Rugby Football Club” but changed to its current name in 1976 when it joined USA Rugby. It is one of only two collegiate rugby teams in North Carolina (the other being UNC-Chapel Hill).

The Florida International Rugby Football Club, Inc. is a rugby club based in Miami, Florida. The club competes in the Florida Rugby Football Union and USA South Conference for men’s collegiate rugby; for women, it competes in the USA South Conference and USA South Women’s Sevens Conference.

In addition to its collegiate teams, FIU Rugby has an under-19 side that plays in Florida Youth Rugby State Tournament, which takes place every summer at Lockhart Stadium (home of Fort Lauderdale Strikers). The team also has an open squad that competes against other clubs from across the country during an annual tournament held over Memorial Day weekend in Kissimmee, FL.

The Crimson are a perennial powerhouse in collegiate rugby, having won five national championships since their founding in 1932. Last year they were named USA Rugby’s Men’s College Division 1 National Champions after beating Dartmouth College in overtime 19-17 at Infinity Park Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on May 7th 2019.
