American Colleges That Play Rugby

Rugby is a fast-paced game that’s played by two teams of 15 players. Each team tries to score points by touching the ball down in their opponent’s end zone. Rugby is played on grass fields and has similarities to American football. The sport originated in England in 1823 and has since grown into an international phenomenon, with rugby sevens becoming an Olympic sport in 2016.

Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) is a NCAA Division I-A member school with an extensive history in rugby. The ASU Rugby Club has been around since 1959, and they play in the Pac-12 conference of USA Rugby. The club’s most notable achievement is their win at the 2010 Collegiate Rugby Championship—the highest profile college rugby tournament in America.

The team plays its home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

Boston College

Boston College is a private Jesuit Catholic research university located in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is the only NCAA Division I school in New England, with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students (including graduate and professional students).

The school fields 22 varsity sports teams, most of which compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The men’s ice hockey team competes at Hockey East.

Brigham Young University

BYU rugby is the oldest club sport at BYU, with its first recorded game dating back to 1973. BYU rugby competes in the PAC Rugby Conference against BYU’s other club sports and has done so for over 20 years.

The University of Utah, which comprises both a university and an athletics program, offers a full-time coaching staff that trains student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level in all sports offered by both institutions (including football). The Utes also provide scholarship assistance as well as housing assistance for those who qualify based on need or merit.

Brown University

Brown University Rugby Football Club is a varsity club sport at Brown University. The club was formed in 1971 and competes against Ivy League schools as well as other universities across the United States. It has won multiple championships, including the prestigious USA Rugby Division I National Championship in 2005, 2011 and 2013.

California Polytechnic State University

California Polytechnic State University is a public university in San Luis Obispo, California. The university has a strong rugby program and the team has won national titles. It plays in the Western Intercollegiate Rugby Association (WIRA).

California State University Long Beach

California State University Long Beach (CSULB) is a public university located in Long Beach, CA. CSULB has a rugby team called the Long Beach State 49ers. They play in the PAC Rugby Conference, which consists of teams from schools such as California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and San Diego State University.

California State University Northridge

CSUN is a public university in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, United States. It was founded in 1958 and is known for its academic strength and research in the areas of science, engineering, business, liberal arts and health sciences. It is home to over 28,000 students from all backgrounds and more than 100 nationalities.

Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University is a member of the Big Ten Conference, NCAA Division I and Mid-American Conference. The school’s rugby team is a member of the Central Collegiate Rugby Conference.

CMU has several notable alumni including Bill Clinton and Robert Bosch.

Clemson University

Clemson University is a public, coeducational, land-grant, research university in Clemson, South Carolina, United States. Clemson is an hour drive from Myrtle Beach and has been ranked by multiple sources as one of the top universities in the South. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across 15 schools and colleges; it also offers professional degrees in business administration, medicine and law.

Colorado School of Mines

Located in Golden, Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines was founded in 1874. The school’s mascot is the Oredigger and its colors are Maroon and Gold.

The club rugby team competes in Division 2A/2B of the Rocky Mountain Rugby Football Union (RMU).

Colgate University

Colgate University is a private liberal arts college located in Hamilton Village, Hamilton, New York. It has been recognized as one of the top 20 best colleges in the United States by Forbes. The university is a member of the Patriot League and a Division I NCAA institution.

The school’s sports teams are known as the Raiders. In addition to rugby, they have programs for baseball, basketball, cross country/track & field (indoor and outdoor), equestrian sports (show jumping and dressage), football (marching band), golf, ice hockey (marching band), lacrosse (co-ed team), sailing/water sports (crew), skiing/snowboarding, soccer (co-ed team), softball/fast pitch softball

Cornell University

Cornell University has a men’s rugby team, a women’s rugby team, and a coed rugby club. The latter is open to anyone who wants to play but doesn’t fit into the usual gender binary.

Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College is located in Hanover, New Hampshire. It’s a member of the Ivy League and has a rugby team.

Dartmouth has both a club team and an organized program that allows students to take classes specific to rugby. The club team plays against other New England colleges, while the program is for those who want to eventually play on an NCAA-affiliated D1 or D2 college team.

Duke University

Duke University Rugby Football Club (DURFC) is the oldest club sport at Duke University and the only club sport that has been around since the founding of the university in 1838. DURFC was founded in 1972 under the name “Duke Blue Devils Rugby Football Club” but changed to its current name in 1976 when it joined USA Rugby. It is one of only two collegiate rugby teams in North Carolina (the other being UNC-Chapel Hill).

The Florida International Rugby Football Club, Inc. is a rugby club based in Miami, Florida. The club competes in the Florida Rugby Football Union and USA South Conference for men’s collegiate rugby; for women, it competes in the USA South Conference and USA South Women’s Sevens Conference.

In addition to its collegiate teams, FIU Rugby has an under-19 side that plays in Florida Youth Rugby State Tournament, which takes place every summer at Lockhart Stadium (home of Fort Lauderdale Strikers). The team also has an open squad that competes against other clubs from across the country during an annual tournament held over Memorial Day weekend in Kissimmee, FL.

For those considering attending an Ivy League school to play college rugby, look no further than Harvard University and the Harvard Rugby Football Club. The Crimson are a perennial powerhouse in collegiate rugby, having won five national championships since their founding in 1932. Last year they were named USA Rugby’s Men’s College Division 1 National Champions after beating Dartmouth College in overtime 19-17 at Infinity Park Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on May 7th 2019.
