Architecture is a practice, profession, and academic discipline. The field covers a wide range of activities, from designing individual buildings to whole urban areas. Architectural works might be perceived as cultural landmarks or works of art that are highly valued for their beauty or for symbolic reasons. Architectural feats are often accompanied by communal religious events such as the consecration of a church building or the laying of a foundation stone which will be commemorated in hymns and parades.

The work of architects has an important impact on society and culture, both through buildings they design (e.g., churches or skyscrapers) as well as other types of structures they build (e.g., bridges).

The study of architecture is one of the oldest forms of higher education.

The study of architecture is one of the oldest forms of higher education. The first schools of architecture were established in ancient Greece and Rome. In France, the first degree awarded in architecture was the Degree of Master of Architecture, which was created by royal decree on March 28th 1669; this date marks the beginning of a professional regulatory framework for architects. It was not until 1823 that an academy or school for professional training called École des Beaux-Arts (School for Fine Arts) opened its doors to students who wished to become architects. Today there are hundreds of accredited architecture schools all around the world from which aspiring architects can receive their education.

The degree offered in most countries is Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), or similar.

The degree offered in most countries is Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), or similar.

The BArch has become the standard degree for architects, and it is often taught at universities worldwide. It is also the most widely recognized university-level qualification to work as an architect.

In many universities, a postgraduate degree in architecture is offered as Master of Architecture (MArch) or Master of Science (MS) in architecture.

In many universities, a postgraduate degree in architecture is offered as Master of Architecture (MArch) or Master of Science (MS) in architecture. The MArch is a research-oriented degree that can be compared to the PhD. Students must complete a thesis and defend it before a board of academics, architects and designers. The MS can also include some thesis work but focuses more on professional practice and specialization.

The MS in architecture and construction management includes courses on construction methods, materials and systems as well as urban planning principles to prepare students for careers in architectural firms or the construction industry. Another option is the MS in architecture and urban planning; this program focuses on sustainable design principles while providing training for professionals interested in applying them to real-world projects across multiple disciplines from urban planning through engineering design to landscape architecture design

Persons who successfully complete the Dipl.-Ing. Title are eligible to enter the German state examination system to obtain a license to practice as an architect (German architects are entitled to design buildings, prepare plans and contract for construction work on their own authority).

  • Diploma of Engineering (Dipl.-Ing.)
  • Diploma of Engineering and Architecture (Dipl.-Ing. Arch.)
  • Master of Architecture (M.Arch.)
  • Master of Science in Architecture (MSc Architectural Sciences)
  • Master of Science in Urban Planning, Landscape Planning and Design (MSc Urbanismus, Landschaftsplanung und Gestaltung)
  • Bachelor’s degree with specialization on urban planning, landscape gardening or architecture

Foreign graduates from accredited schools who do not speak German fluently may be awarded an Architekturzulassungsverordnung or AZV.

You do not need an AZV to work in Germany as an architect. If you have a degree from an accredited architecture program and speak German fluently, you can work in Germany without obtaining the AZV.

If you do not speak fluent German and would like to practice architecture in Germany, it is possible to obtain an AZV through a language test and examination process at the state level. However, this is not required by law; it is simply one way of demonstrating that you have sufficient proficiency in German so as to practice architecture without hindering communication with clients or colleagues who may be native speakers of that language.

The master’s degree allows architects to qualify for the Staatsexamen that is required for the formal approval title, “Architekt”.

A Master’s degree in Germany is a postgraduate academic degree that allows students to pursue careers as researchers and professors. It also provides those who already have a PhD with further training in their chosen field.

A Master’s degree can be earned from many universities, but the best schools will only accept students who have a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Urban Planning, or related fields.

In Germany, it is required to complete an internship before applying for your Staatsexamen (exam) which gives you right to practice as an architect.

The German state examination is the most important requirement for obtaining a license to practice as an architect. It includes a series of exams covering various aspects of architecture, such as construction technology, planning and building law, interior design or energy efficiency. At the end of this process, you will have gained valuable experience through practical work during your studies or internships at an architecture firm while also having acquired technical skills in different fields such as surveying or landscape architecture.
