Washington University in St Louis, MO. –

Architecture is a small but strong concentration within the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St Louis. The school and the program have received many accolades: In 2015, the school was ranked second among graduate programs by DesignIntelligence; in 2016, it was ranked #9 by Architect magazine; and, in 2017-2018, it achieved a 98% placement rate. Washington University’s architecture program offers an interdisciplinary approach to studio work and professional preparation that challenges students to investigate building technology as well as cultural contexts. Students also have access to resources available through the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and the Sam Fox School’s Fabrication Lab and Digital Studio.

For this past year’s thesis projects, students were asked to create a new museum for the city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Over the course of two semesters—the first devoted to research and representation techniques, with students traveling abroad during spring break—students explored ideas about “building without buildings” centered on performance art installations that would take place outside of traditional architectural spaces. A selection of these projects is featured below.”
