The University of MichiganArt Museum is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The museum opened on September 16, 1879 and was the first public university art museum west of the Allegheny Mountains that was founded by an individual who had no academic affiliation with the university. It was also among the first fine arts museums in America to be affiliated with a public institution of higher education. In 1877, Henry Simmons Frieze donated his large collection of post-Civil War American paintings, now known as “The Frieze Collection”, to the university. The museum’s collection has grown since its founding; today it contains more than 15,000 works of art ranging from antiquity through modern times.

UM Art Museum is located on North Campus and can be reached by bus or by car. Bus transportation will bring you to the museum from various locations around Ann Arbor, including University of Michigan Central Campus and the University of Michigan Transportation Services building next door. Parking is available in the lot between UM Art Museum and UM School of Art & Design.
