Academic excellence

Does the Chevening academic criteria apply to me?

  • You must have a good first degree which is recognised by UK NARIC as equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree. It must be completed before you submit your application. You may not begin studying for this at the time of submitting your application.
  • Your undergraduate degree should be in any discipline, but it should not be in clinical medicine, dentistry or veterinary science (a medical doctorate – MBBS – is acceptable).
  • If you do not have an undergraduate degree, then you will need to explain how previous professional experience and achievements demonstrates that you satisfy at least three out of the five Chevening English language requirements listed above. English language test certificates are still required.

You must also demonstrate that:

  • You have a good grade point average (GPA) or an equivalent standard of professional qualification, e.g.: excellent grades/marks in previous studies; or memberships of relevant professional organisations; or awards and prizes received within your profession or community; or publications written by you related to your subject area etc.

Strong leadership potential

You should be able to demonstrate that you have

• a high level of motivation and the ability to work under pressure

• strong communication skills and the ability to influence people at all levels

• the ability to think critically, solve problems creatively and make decisions effectively

• a good standard of written and spoken English

• an understanding of how your leadership skills can improve what you do in your professional life

You will also need to show evidence of:

  • having leadership potential [through your referees’ assessments/your application answers]  [or something else] – we are looking for people who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. You should provide examples that relate to your experience, e.g. leading teams or managing projects. If you have no work experience, please explain why this is not applicable to you; what other ways have you been recognised as a leader? (max 200 words)

Potentials for becoming a positive change agent

The Chevening application form has space for you to explain yourself in four areas: leadership potential, professional achievement, ambition, and potential to make a positive impact on society. Because this is a scholarship for future leaders, it’s important that you show how your experiences thus far have qualified you for this role.

You should look at the list of qualities above and choose examples from your life that demonstrate these values. If you’re struggling to come up with examples from your life or career so far, take some time to think about personal strengths and achievements outside of work as well—you may be surprised at what aspects of your life show leadership potential! You can also use other people’s descriptions of you as evidence of these qualities (as long as they are reputable sources).
