Dr. Silva has been a member of the Medical Staff at St. John’s Hospital since 2007 and served as Director of Cardiology from 2009 to 2011. He is currently Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. John’s Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts where he has worked since 2011.
Dr Silva received his medical degree from the Federal University in Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, in 1983, completed an internship/residency program at UFMG in 1986 and then joined a fellowship program in cardiology under Dr Jacques Muller-Langhans for 2 years at Albert Einstein College of Medicine before joining Mount Sinai Hospital as Assistant Professor and Chief Fellow Training Officer for 4 years until 1991 when he moved back to Brazil starting up practice as a physician while working as an assistant professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).

In 2002, he was the first to describe and map out a coronary artery disease gene that was later named in his honor. He has been involved with research into a number of other genetic heart diseases including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy.
Dr. Topol has published more than 1,500 papers and reviews on topics ranging from coronary artery disease to genetics, imaging and genomics. He has also written dozens of books including “The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care”; “More Than Human”; “Your Life Unlocked”; “The Patient Will See You Now: The Future of Medicine is in Your Hands”; “The Creative Destruction of Medicine” which won the National Academies Communication Award for best book about health care communication; “Real-Time Phenotyping: Using Big Data Analytics To Adaptively Treat Heart Failure”; as well as several children’s books including “From Fetus To Child: A Parent’s Guide To Raising Healthy Kids In A Toxic World”.
