The college therefore differs from most other colleges in placing members (graduate students and fellows) at the heart of its activities, rather than starting with undergraduates and expanding only gradually through graduate students.

Churchill College was the first of the colleges to be established. In 1959, a Trust was established to support its creation and initial development. Its first home was at Drapers’ Hall in Throgmorton Street, London. In 1960, Sir Winston Churchill wrote to Lord Cherwell (Frederick Lindemann), his former science advisor, asking him to comment on a proposed college for undergraduates and graduates in science. The idea had been brought to him by Sir Maurice Bowra, Warden of Wadham College at Oxford University, who was also Master of University College at Cambridge University.

Churchill’s letter expressed his desire that the new college should support: “the advancement of scientific research within its own walls and in collaboration with University scholars”; “the expansion and improvement of knowledge transfer between academic communities and industry”; “the training and education of trained scientists for their future work whether it lies with government departments or commercial factories”.

The college was inaugurated in 1961 by King Harold II during Churchill’s life time, though he died three months later; he said in the speech “It is not just your founders whom you honour”, but added that he hoped it would bear Churchill’s name forever. It opened fully on March 12 1962; making it the third oldest Cambridge college after Peterhouse founded in 1284 and Clare College founded in 1326 as well as being one of four mixed-sex colleges at Cambridge. The inaugural address was given by Sir John Cockcroft.
