Ultimately, though, the college application process boils down to calculating your high school GPA. You need a high enough grade point average (GPA) to be competitive in the admissions process, but you also want to make sure that your GPA is competitive enough to meet certain academic goals. For most students, that means a 3.5 or better. But unlike many application processes, the college acceptance rate doesn’t tell you much about what type of person would do well at your school. Metrics like SAT scores and ACT scores mostly exist as predictors for how well students will perform in specific classes and majors at your school—but they aren’t predictive of whether someone would thrive academically as an overall student or if he’d be happy as an individual in general. That’s why you need to take into account factors such as extracurricular involvement and personal achievements during high school when thinking about how well you’d do on campus and how happy you’d be there overall.*

SAT scores

The average SAT scores for accepted college students are quite high, but the scores vary greatly depending on the school in question. For example, a score of 1210 is usually enough to get you admitted to a state school while an equivalent score would land you a spot at Harvard.

What’s considered a good SAT score? As you can see from above, it all depends on where you’re trying to go. Your best bet is to look up your potential colleges and find out what their averages are for your major, then add about 100 points to that number.

For example: If you’re aiming for UCLA as an environmental science major, their average combined SAT score is about 1370. Add 100 points to that and you’ve got an idea of what kind of score would land you admission as an environmental science major at UCLA.

ACT scores

According to the College Board, average composite scores on the ACT average 28. The individual sections range from 18 for English and Math to 31 for Reading and Writing. Taking both sections with a score of at least 25 will earn you a good chance of admission in most colleges. This is known as your composite score on the ACT (which stands for American College Testing). If you’re interested in avoiding college altogether and joining the ranks of young adults who prefer to stay home, you may want to consider taking the ACT again, so that they can be sure that you actually did it right.

If you’re in high school and hoping to attend a prestigious school, you may have heard that certain ones are easy to get into.
