Acceptance rates have been rising in recent years, with 61% of high school seniors thinking they will get into an institution of higher learning in 2016, up from 58% a year earlier. That’s according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), which surveyed more than 6,000 juniors across the country to come up with that figure.

But as it turns out, acceptance rates have been rising in recent years, with 61% of high school seniors thinking they will get into an institution of higher learning in 2016, up from 58% a year earlier. NACAC’s report cites three probable causes for the higher acceptance rates: more applications to colleges, institutions looking for diversity as well as academic excellence and an increase in application fees. All are contributing to higher college acceptance rates. Higher education officials are concerned that these trends will eventually lead to selective colleges accepting fewer lower-income and first-generation students.

“We find that there is great concern among the public that diversity may be compromised in favor of selectivity,” said NACAC CEO Joyce Smith in a statement accompanying the report. “We hope this year’s data suggest otherwise.”
