COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GPA

As a lower-tier public university, Charleston sets its grade point average (GPA) standards pretty high. College of Charleston is a public institution that was founded in 1770. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 11,342, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 105 acres. On December 1, 1770, the general assembly of South Carolina approved a bill chartering “a college or seminary of learning.” The bill made it possible for leaders of the Church of England to open a free school for “the education of youth in the English and Indian languages.” The first class didn’t start studying until March 23, 1773; it consisted of two members. Seven years later, the school was officially named King’s College.

In 1805, King’s College moved from downtown to its current location on Calhoun Street. Located three miles from downtown and five miles from the coast, there were many reasons why this area was chosen over other locations in town. Today, you may be walking along a cobblestone path that was built by slaves and passing beneath an archway that they also helped construct.

The college has grown since its founding as an all-male institution to one with roughly equal numbers of men and women. In addition to undergraduate students who live on campus each year, there are 2,000 students enrolled in extension programs in areas ranging from health care to business administration.

The original campus is still present at College of Charleston today—though much has changed since its early days as an institution with fewer than 15 total students. The university now has more than 11,000 undergraduate students (26% are international) and more than 14% have some form of financial aid—making it one of the most well-funded public institutions in South Carolina’s higher education system.
