college requirements for international students
Requirements for an international student may vary, but there are some commonalities between Universities.
While requirements for an international student may vary from school to school there are some commonalities. Universities typically require:
- proficiency in the English language
- FAFSA form filled out (in order to receive federal financial aid)
- proof of citizenship
- proof of financial support (as international students don’t qualify for federal financial aid, they must show that they have the means to fund their studies, which can be quite expensive).
International students need to present an English Proficiency Exam Score.
International students must provide a score from an English proficiency exam. Some of the most common tests are TOEFL, PTE, IELTS, C1 Advanced, CAE and CPE.
Minimum scores required by US universities vary according to the program you apply to. For example:
- Harvard requires a minimum of 100 in TOEFL iBT or 7.0 in IELTS
- MIT requires a minimum of 102 in TOEFL iBT or 7.5 in IELTS
- UCLA requires a minimum of 88 in TOEFL iBT or 6.5 in IELTS
The scores you need depend on your university and major choices. Therefore, we highly recommend that students check each school’s admission requirements before applying for English language proficiency exams.[1] If you have any questions about this process, please reach out to us at advisors@hotchalkedu.com so that we can help as soon as possible!
Universities require international students to fill out a FAFSA (AS A RESIDENT OF US)
In order to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid, including Pell grants and Federal Direct Loans, you must file a FAFSA form as a resident of the U.S. Similarly, in order to be considered for state financial aid you must file a FAFSA as well.
Filling out the FAFSA form will require that you have an SSN or ITIN number, which is only issued to permanent residents or citizens of the United States. You will not be able to submit this form unless you have an SSN or ITIN number.
Universities require international students to supply proof of citizenship.
In order to ensure that you are legally allowed to study in their institution, the university may require international students to submit different forms of documentation. This can include a birth certificate, passport, visa, and more. To be sure that you have all the documentation you need for your application, consult this helpful resource on student visas.
When applying to college as an international student, it is also important to keep in mind that some universities will charge international students higher tuition rates than domestic ones. You can find out if a specific school charges higher tuition by looking at their website or by contacting them directly using the contact information they provide on their website.
Most Universities will require you to show your family can financially support you while in school.
In order to be admitted to a university as an international student, you must show that your family can support you financially through your college years.
To calculate how much money it will cost for you to attend university in the United States, first find out the school’s tuition price. This will tell you what it costs for one year of education. Some schools list their tuition by semester or by credit hours, so make sure you are looking at their yearly rate if they do not have it clearly posted. Add on any other extra fees that may be charged and include those in your total cost.
Tuition does not include living expenses such as food and housing. For these costs, plan to spend between $8,000–$15,000 per year depending on where you live and how often you go out with friends.
If this amount of money is more than your family can afford right now, don’t worry! Many schools are able to provide scholarships or grants based on financial need as well as academic achievement If there is no way that they could pay for any part of your education without help from outside sources then start looking around for scholarships now—the earlier the better because some have deadlines approaching soon! You can find them online or ask about them at universities where applying students might qualify based on criteria such as grade point average (GPA).
International Students should research the requirements of any given University prior to applying.
International students should research the requirements of any given University prior to applying. You must have your official transcripts translated by an approved translator, have proof that you have completed secondary school and are eligible for higher education in your home country. Some universities will also require standardized test scores from exams such as The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), The International English Testing System (IELTS) and more.
You should also research courses and programs offered at the University. Many schools offer online classes, online degrees, blended programs or other learning opportunities to fit the needs of students.
