Not every college student is a member of a choir or a band. You can earn college scholarships for singing—and it’s not just for opera or pop stars either! Whether you’re an aspiring singer, songwriter, rapper, poet or spoken word artist, there are plenty of ways to get free money for school if you know where to look.

University of New Hampshire

The University of New Hampshire offers a Vocal Performance Scholarship for students who are majoring in this field. The scholarship covers tuition, fees and room and board expenses up to $25,000 per year. This scholarship is also renewable for up to 4 years if you continue to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and meet all other requirements as determined by the university.

North Carolina State University

The North Carolina State University (NCSU) School of Music offers a variety of scholarships for music students, including the Bettye Zoller Scholarship. The scholarship is open to undergraduate music majors who demonstrate financial need and have demonstrated excellence in vocal performance. It provides $4,000 per academic year for up to three years.

Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be eligible for federal student aid before applying. University of Arizona

The University of Arizona, a public research university in Tucson, AZ, is offering a scholarship to music majors. The Music Scholarship is available to incoming freshmen and transfer students who are admitted into the School of Music. The recipient will receive $8000 per academic year for one year or two semesters.

Towson University

Towson University offers a number of scholarships for singing, including:

• Music performance scholarships
• Music theory and composition scholarships
• Music education and music therapy scholarships.

Towson University also offers other musical-related academic opportunities, such as internships with local symphony orchestras or opera companies, as well as master classes with renowned musicians and conductors.

Loyola University (Maryland)

The Loyola University (Maryland) Music Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship that is awarded to students with a strong interest in music. The scholarship is awarded each year to current students who are enrolled as majors of the Loyola University Maryland School of Music.

The scholarship will be applied directly toward their tuition and fees, meaning they do not have to take out any loans.

Concordia College

Concordia College offers a $1,000 scholarship to students who have a high GPA and who have been involved in the music department. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The scholarship is only open to students who are enrolled in a music major or minor.

Butler University

Butler University offers three scholarships for students who sing. These include the Music Scholarship, which is awarded based on merit and financial need; the Butler University Amphitheater Scholarship, which goes to a student who is enrolled full-time at Butler; and the Singing Scholarship, which is awarded to students who have been accepted into Butler’s music program.

• Berklee College of Music has music scholarships that are awarded based on merit and financial need.
• Vassar College offers two types of scholarships: academic awards and performance grants. Academic awards are given to students who have excelled in their studies while performance grants are given to those who have shown exceptional talent in their particular field of study (i.e., music).

The scholarships we’ve discussed here vary in amount, requirements, and eligibility. For example, the University of Northern Colorado offers a $2,000 scholarship for vocal arts majors who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. In contrast, Butler University gives out four $1,000 awards to students who are studying opera or musical theatre performance in addition to their academic studies at the school.
