Water Polo is a sport that originated in the late 1800s. The game is played with one ball and two teams of seven players who must use their hands, feet and head to get the ball into their opponent’s goal. Water polo has been played in the Olympics since 1904 and has seen an increase in popularity over the years. It’s also starting to become more recognized as a scholarship sport at colleges across America! Here are some schools that offer scholarships for water polo players:
Bucknell University
Bucknell University is located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It is a member of NCAA Division I and has a water polo team that plays in the East Coast Conference. The team competes in games during the fall season, which lasts from mid-September through early December. Bucknell offers several scholarships to athletes who are interested in playing water polo at the university. These include:
- Residential Scholarships – Scholarships are offered to male and female athletes who want to live on campus while attending classes at Bucknell University. This scholarship is worth $15,000 per year for four years ($60,000 total) and will be awarded based on financial need as well as athletic success as measured by GPA and SAT/ACT scores.* Academic-Based Scholarships – These scholarships are given out based on academic performance; they vary depending on how high your GPA is when compared with other students receiving an academic-based scholarship from the school.* Athletic-Based Scholarships – Athletes can receive this type of scholarship if they demonstrate outstanding athletic ability during tryouts for water polo teams at Bucknell University or any other school where they’ve been recruited by another program’s coach(es).
California State University, Long Beach
CSULB is a great place to play water polo.
The Golden Eagles are one of the most successful collegiate water polo programs in the country and boast a long history of success, including three national championships (1961, 1970, 1974). The athletic department also sponsors several other sports, so it’s possible that you could receive an athletic scholarship for playing another sport at CSULB as well as for water polo.

The Claremont McKenna College Water Polo team is part of a division within the NCAA that includes only women’s teams. There are 45 schools in this division, including some well-known institutions like Stanford University and University of Southern California. The women’s Division III water polo season runs from late September to late May each year, with a championship tournament held in early June.
- Scholarships
As many as 25 scholarships are available for incoming freshmen and transfer students who have experience playing water polo on an established high school or club team. These scholarships are renewable each year if you remain eligible academically, athletically, and socially throughout your time at Claremont McKenna College (i.e., if you attend all practices/games as required).
Fordham University
Fordham University is a private research university located in New York City. The school was founded in 1841 by the Society of Jesus, which is also known as the Jesuits. Fordham has a strong athletic program, including water polo.
Fordham is a member of the Patriot League with other colleges such as Army, Boston College, Bucknell University and Colgate University.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
MIT is a well-known, elite university that offers water polo scholarships to those players who are interested in pursuing a degree in engineering. MIT’s team has been recognized as one of the best in the country and they frequently compete at national and international levels. The school also has competitive programs in Computer Science, Business Administration, Biology, Chemistry and Physics which can be completed on campus or online with their distance learning program.
