McNeese State University is a public university located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, United States. The university is a member of the University of Louisiana System and the Southern University System. It is a member of the NCAA Division I Southland Conference.
McNeese State was founded in 1939 as an agricultural college through the consolidation of two existing colleges: Southwestern Louisiana Institute (1906–1939) and McNeese Junior College (1926–1939). The name “McNeese” is derived from that of state senator George T. McNeese, who sponsored legislation establishing what would be then called McNeese Junior College for future students to attend beginning in 1930.
