When you’re looking to earn a degree in special education, it’s helpful to know which universities offer good programs. Here are seven colleges that do just that:

University of Oregon

University of Oregon offers a bachelor’s degree in special education, with an emphasis on teaching. The university is located in Eugene, Oregon. It has a population of over 20,000 students and a graduation rate of approximately 75%.

University of Virginia

Special Education

University of Virginia has a special education major that can be completed entirely online. The program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in special education, including working with individuals with disabilities and those who have language-based learning disabilities. The curriculum includes courses such as “Psychological Foundations of Special Education,” “Principles of Early Childhood Development” and “Early Literacy.” There are several different tracks within the program, depending on your interests: one track focuses on teaching students with intellectual disabilities; another focuses on educating children with autism; and a third focuses on working with gifted students. In addition to the main coursework, all students must complete an internship or student teaching experience before graduating from the university’s online degree program in special education.

The cost for this program is $65 per credit hour and you’ll need about 120 credits to earn your bachelor’s degree (four years).

Western Michigan University

Western Michigan University has a variety of special education programs, including:

Ohio State University

Ohio State University offers a special education major that will prepare you to work with children with disabilities in a variety of settings, from school districts and tutoring centers to hospitals and mental health facilities. Special education teachers usually teach students who have specific learning abilities or physical challenges. The university was founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution; it now has over 58,000 students enrolled at its Columbus campus alone each year. Ohio State’s graduation rate for first-time freshmen has steadily increased over the last several years, reaching 90% in 2016—and college retention rates are also high: 79% of students who began their studies at Ohio State stayed there until they graduated or dropped out (compared to an average retention rate across all universities of 77%).

University of Washington

The University of Washington’s Special Education Program is an undergraduate and graduate program that can prepare you for a career as a special education teacher. The Bachelor of Arts in Special Education teaches you how to design curriculum, instruct students using multiple methods, and evaluate student progress. Students who wish to teach classes at the university level must complete a Master’s degree in Special Education; this is also an option for those not planning on teaching at the college level.

When applying to the University of Washington, you will need:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (preferably a 4-year university) with coursework completed in the following areas: reading, mathematics and science
Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities (some exceptions apply)

New York University

New York University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree program. The program is designed for students who want to teach in elementary or middle schools and secondary schools, including high school.

Students must meet all requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department for students who wish to become teachers in New York state. In addition, NYU requires that all candidates for the master’s degree have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4-point scale (A=4).

NYU also requires applicants to submit their applications before January 31st each year and take part in an interview with representatives from the university’s education department during their campus visit.

California State University, Long Beach

If you’re interested in pursuing a degree in special education, California State University, Long Beach offers a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education. This program is accredited by the CSU system. In order to graduate from this program, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and complete at least 60 units and two years’ worth of coursework.

Hunter College of CUNY

Hunter College of CUNY offers a B.A. in Special Education, which can be completed online by going to www.hunter.cuny.edu and choosing the “Admissions” tab on the homepage, then choosing “Undergraduate Admissions” on the left-hand side of the page. The program is offered at Hunter’s Manhattan campus, but students can earn their degree from anywhere in New York State that has access to high-speed internet (including remote locations).

The curriculum includes courses such as Educational Psychology and Special Education Methods; Basic Academic Skills for Students with Disabilities; Introduction to Self Advocacy Skills for Individuals with Disabilities; Advanced Self Advocacy Skills for Individuals with Disabilities; IEP Meeting Preparation Workshop: Legal Rights & Obligations; and Independent Living Skills Workshop: Job Search Strategies & Interview Techniques among others. Students must complete an internship or field experience in addition to completing a minimum of 120 course credits within five years of entering into their program as well as pass all required examinations before graduating from it successfully!
