The school opened its doors to its first class of 100 students on October 10, 1905 at Eulji Building in Dong-no near Dongdaemun Gate in Seoul under the name of “Yeongeunmunwon”.

In 1914 it took the name “Hanyang Academy”, and in 1919 it became “Hwangseong College” which would eventually become one of the early leaders among Korean colleges that offered degrees to women as well as men (the other leader being Ewha Womans University). In 1925 when it became clear that this small college would need additional space for their growing student body they moved from their original location near Dongdaemun Gate into another building located near Imnando Station on what is now called Taepyeongno Street where they remained until 1950 when they moved again–this time further south across town where they remain today.[3]
