Colleges That Offer Academic Scholarships
Whether you’re a high school senior looking to go to college, or a current college student who is still deciding where you want to study, you may be wondering if there are any schools that offer academic scholarships. You may have heard about the National Merit Scholarship Program and other types of merit-based awards, but these are only available for students who apply by taking the PSAT in 10th or 11th grade (or the SAT in 12th grade). Not everyone qualifies for those programs because they require students to score well on standardized tests. If you can’t qualify for these programs, then what other ways exist for students to get money for tuition? Here is a list of colleges that offer academic scholarships:
Worcester State University
- $1,000 – $5,000
- October 15th
- For incoming freshmen who plan to major in the following majors: nursing and health sciences, clinical laboratory science, biology or chemistry with a minor in allied health.
This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement with consideration given to financial need.
To apply for this scholarship you must submit the application form as well as official transcripts from your high school and college/university.
Providence College
Providence College is a private, coeducational, Roman Catholic university located in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It was founded in 1917 by the Congregation of Holy Cross, a religious community of men whose mission is “to be other Christs” and make the world more human through education, research, service to others and leadership in all endeavors.
Rowan University
Rowan University is a public university located in Glassboro, New Jersey. Rowan University has an annual enrollment of more than 13,000 students and offers more than 200 undergraduate programs as well as graduate programs in business administration, education, engineering technology and nursing.
Rowan University offers academic scholarships to incoming freshmen based on academic achievement. Academic scholarships range from $500-$5,000 per year (excluding athletic scholarships).
Rowan University also offers athletic scholarships to student athletes who meet certain criteria including GPA requirements and other factors such as height/weight ratio or SAT scores (athletic scholarships may be separate from academic awards).
University of Akron
At the University of Akron, academic scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and extracurricular activities. Each semester, the Office of Financial Aid offers scholarships based on academic performance, extracurricular activities and financial need. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 each semester for one year after receiving their award.
The university also offers scholarship programs specifically for first-year students that require full-time enrollment (at least 12 credit hours per semester) during their first year at UA. The award amount varies by program but will be credited toward tuition costs up to $5,000 per year ($10,000 total).
Sewanee-The University of the South
Sewanee-The University of the South is a private university located in Tennessee. It was founded as a preparatory school for boys in 1857, and it became coeducational in 1972. Sewanee has a religious affiliation with the Episcopal Church and is known for its historic buildings, including one designed by Stanford White (who also designed the Washington Square Arch). The school also has an impressive acceptance rate—about 70 percent of applicants are accepted each year—and very affordable tuition costs: around $40,000 per year if you’re paying out-of-state rates or $22,500 if you’re paying in-state rates. Plus, this school boasts high graduation rates (90 percent) and average GPAs (3.45).
Westfield State University
Westfield State University is a public university with a total enrollment of over 11,000 students. It offers academic scholarships to incoming freshmen based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Scholarships range from $500 to $10,000 per year and are granted for up to four years of study at the school.
Ashland University
Ashland University offers a variety of scholarships, including academic scholarships. The university’s tuition is $24,500 per year for full-time students and $1,000 per credit hour for part-time students (2018–2019).
In addition to an Honors Program that provides a challenging curriculum in each major area of study, Ashland University offers several other academic programs as well.
SUNY Cortland
SUNY Cortland offers a wide range of academic scholarships based on merit and financial need. The university also awards scholarships to incoming freshmen who excel in the arts, athletics and other areas.
Cortland’s Academic Merit Scholarships are awarded to students who have a high GPA (3.0 or higher) and SAT/ACT scores of 1300 or higher. These awards are valued between $2,500 and $7,500 per year for up to five years if you maintain your GPA requirement throughout college.
Incoming freshmen with exceptional performance in one of these areas may qualify for an additional award:
- Artistic Scholarship ($1,000)

Florida Southern College
Florida Southern College is a private liberal arts college in Lakeland, Florida, United States. It is the oldest private college in Florida and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Founded in 1883 as South Florida Baptist Institute, its name was changed to Florida Baptist Academy in 1888 before settling on its current designation.
The school has over 4,500 students representing all 50 states and 80 foreign countries. A member of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), FSC offers nearly 70 undergraduate majors along with an array of graduate degree programs that can be completed entirely online or through one of 11 regional centers located throughout North America.
Fort Lewis College
If you’re looking for an opportunity to get your education paid for, Fort Lewis College could be a great place. The school offers several scholarships for students who meet the eligibility criteria. They also offer several scholarships that are only available to transfer students or international students.
Fort Lewis College has many scholarship opportunities available specifically for Native American students, military veterans and their families, and transfer students from another college or university. The school’s Honors Program is also open to high school seniors who have a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale (or equivalent).
