Colleges That Offer Astrophysics Majors

Astrophysics is a very popular field among colleges and universities. There are only a few schools that offer bachelor’s degrees in astrophysics, but there are numerous graduate programs available.

Caltech

Caltech is a private research university located in Pasadena, California. It was founded in 1891 as Throop University by Amos G. Throop at the height of the California Gold Rush. The university’s first president was George Pardee, who started the school with $20,000 from his father’s estate and later donated land to expand its campus. Caltech has since grown into one of the most prestigious universities in the world and is ranked #1 among US national universities by US News & World Report for 2018–19; it also ranks #1 for physics doctoral programs, tied for first place for astronomy doctoral programs (tied with Harvard) and tied for second place after Stanford University in chemical engineering doctoral programs. Harvard University

Harvard University is one of the oldest universities in the US and ranked as the top university in the world. It’s located in Cambridge, MA and offers a BA in astrophysics. The Department of Astronomy at Harvard has been conducting research in astrophysics since 1839, when it was founded by John Quincy Adams (the second president of the US). Today, there are about 40 professors and 150 graduate students involved with research related to astronomy. As part of its mission statement, it says: “Harvard College seeks to educate men and women to develop their capacities for critical thought and creative action so that they may lead lives enriched by an understanding of themselves; by understanding others; by contributing through scholarship or leadership or service to society at large.”

Princeton University

Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. Princeton provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. The institution has graduated many notable alumni.

Stanford University

Stanford University is home to a strong astrophysics program, with research in the field dating back to the university’s founding. The department of physics at Stanford has been involved in cutting-edge research for many years, and these efforts have led to numerous discoveries, including ones made by some of today’s most notable astrophysicists.

The graduate level curriculum emphasizes theoretical and computational physics; students must complete a thesis prior to graduation. PhD programs are open only to those who have received their master’s degrees from an accredited institution of higher learning; this requirement can be fulfilled by submitting an official transcript showing adequate course work in astronomy or other related fields. Columbia University in the City of New York

Columbia University in the City of New York is a private Ivy League research university located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City. Dartmouth College is a private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. It was founded in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock and established as the ninth president of the College. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school has a strong focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. MIT has been ranked as one of the most innovative schools by Forbes magazine multiple times. Yale University

Yale University offers a BS in Astrophysics, as well as a MS and PhD in the same field. Additionally, Yale offers a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) program for students interested in pursuing careers within academia or research.

The CAS program is designed to prepare students for careers as researchers and university professors by offering courses that help them gain experience with independent study projects within an interdisciplinary setting. Students who enroll in this program must complete at least one year of study before they can apply to become candidates for admission into one of Yale’s graduate programs.
