The fashion industry is a booming one, with the U.S. Department of Commerce reporting that it was worth $211 billion in 2017 alone. And with these numbers on the rise, more and more students are looking to get their foot in the door by studying fashion design and marketing in college. But while there are many accredited institutions across America offering this degree program, not all of them are created equal. So what should you be looking for when deciding which school is right for you?

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

The Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MCAD) is located in Boston, Massachusetts.
MCAD has an acceptance rate of 60%, and a student population of 1,600.
The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Pratt Institute

Pratt Institute is a private non-profit university in New York City. Founded in 1887 as a technical school for women, Pratt Institute has a student body of about 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students. The institution offers bachelor’s degrees in fine arts and design; engineering; architecture; information technology; urban studies and planning (PhD); liberal arts (MA); sustainable design (MFA) as well as its own certificate programs.

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is a private college located in New York City. FIT has a high student to faculty ratio, with slightly more than 15,000 students and only 593 full-time faculty members. It also has a high acceptance rate of 81% and an average tuition cost of $34,800 per year. Students at FIT have the option of pursuing either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising. With top-notch instructors who are leaders in the industry and excellent facilities, it’s no wonder that FIT has an exceptionally high graduation rate: 95%.

Academy of Art University

Academy of Art University is a private, non-profit university in San Francisco, California with seven campuses throughout the state of California. It was founded as the Academy of Advertising Art by Richard S. Stephens in 1929. In 1969 the school changed its name to “Academy of Art College”. The first campus opened in San Francisco and offered only night courses but expanded rapidly and started offering degree programs including Associates and Bachelor’s degrees in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Photography as well as Bachelors Degrees in Web Development & Programming\Multimedia; Interactive Media; Fashion Merchandising Design; Interior Design; Game Art & Development; Music Production & Engineering\Audio Post Production\Music Composition ; Illustration

Parsons, The New School for Design

Parsons, The New School for Design is a private art and design college located in the Chelsea neighborhood of the Manhattan borough of New York City, in the United States. It is one of the most selective colleges in America. Its undergraduate program is consistently ranked as one of the top five schools in fashion design in America by US News & World Report. This means that students with an interest in fashion design can look forward to a rigorous education with excellent resources, as well as opportunities to collaborate with other talented individuals from all over the world while they’re there.

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), founded in 1978, is a private university located in Savannah, Georgia. It offers 4-year undergraduate degrees and 6 graduate degrees across over 50 majors. SCAD was founded by Paula Wallace to provide an inclusive environment for art students to learn from one another and collaborate with other students as well as professionals. The school has grown to become one of the top art and design schools in the world where students can take classes taught by top professors who have experience working in their fields.

California College of the Arts (CCA)

California College of the Arts is a highly regarded liberal arts institution in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1907 as the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art and Design and became known as the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1960. The college offers 12 majors and more than 100 minors, with a strong focus on fashion design and fine art.

Students at CCA may earn BFA, MFA, MPS, MA or PhD degrees through the school’s campuses in Oakland and San Francisco or online through its eCampus program. Students can choose from more than 30 programs that cover a wide range of topics such as costume design; graphic design; illustration; industrial design; interior architecture/design; product design; photography; printmaking; video game development (for undergraduates only); arts administration (for undergraduates only) fashion merchandising

Kent State University

Kent State University is a public research university in Kent, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1910 as a teacher-training school. It is now the third largest university in Ohio with an enrollment of over 65,000 students spread across eight campuses including its main campus in Kent.

Drexel University

Drexel University is a private research university with campuses in Philadelphia and Sacramento, California. Founded in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry by financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel, it was renamed Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936.

In May 2011, The Princeton Review included Drexel University on its list of the “Best Northeastern Colleges”, which also included schools like Brown University, Cornell University and Syracuse University.

The university was recognized by the National Science Foundation as a leading producer of Fulbright Scholars from 2004 to 2007 based on a formula that analyzes federal data about colleges’ total number of students who receive federal funding for their studies abroad; this number includes grants for all students not just science majors who study science abroad

Otis College of Art and Design

Otis College of Art and Design is a private, non-profit college located in Los Angeles. The school offers 3 different programs in fashion design: a BFA degree in Fashion Design, an AAS degree in Fashion Merchandising and Merchandising Management (MMM), and an AAS degree in Fashion Marketing. Otis claims to have many connections with the local industry, which could prove useful for students who are trying to network with potential employers.

The school’s alumni report that they have been highly successful after graduation due to the high demand for both creative professionals as well as skilled businesspeople who understand how marketing works within the industry. The most recent statistics available indicate that nearly 95% of graduates report finding employment within six months of graduation; this may be partially due to the fact that Otis has one of the lowest student-to-faculty ratios among colleges offering fashion design programs: only 10:1!

Between both, there are roughly 33,000 students enrolled in fashion and design programs in the state, making it the 5th most popular state for students studying this major.

Massachusetts has a number of colleges that offer fashion and design programs. One such school is The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, which is a nonprofit institution offering associate’s degrees to its students. Other schools include the Wellesley College Graduate School of Design and Bay Path University.
