The Department of Defense treats military history as a core competency. Because of this, the department has invested in military history programs at some colleges and universities. The following list was compiled by identifying schools that offer military history as a major, minor or concentration.

American Public University – Charles Town, WV

American Public University (APU) is a private, non-profit, online university offering associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. APU is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Military History: APU offers a Bachelor of Arts in Military History that allows students to explore the role of military history throughout time. Courses include those such as “Introduction to Warfare,” “The Civil War” and “World War II.”

Arizona State University – Tempe, AZ

Ashford University is a private, online university that offers a Bachelor of Arts in Military History. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Austin Peay State University – Clarksville, TN

Austin Peay State University has a military history department that offers both majors, as well as minors in history and political science.

The department is not highly selective and does not offer many opportunities for internships. However, it is a respected program that offers small classes and individualized attention to each student.

California State University-San Bernardino – San Bernardino, CA

CSU-San Bernardino offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in military history. Students can also earn a minor in the field, as well as take individual courses within the program.

In addition to core courses such as “Introduction to Military History” and “American Military History,” students will explore topics like American Civil War studies, modern conflicts, leadership issues, and more. They’ll also get an opportunity for hands-on experience through internships at organizations like the National Archives or Fort Knox Museum.

George Mason University – Fairfax, VA

George Mason University is a public research university in Fairfax, Virginia. George Mason University was founded as a branch of the University of Virginia in 1949.
