The school’s athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are members of the Horizon League and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Wayne State traces its origins back to 1868 when it was founded as Detroit Medical College by brothers David Jayne Hill (1832-1903) and Horace Hollyer Cooley (1832-1885), who had studied medicine at Harvard Medical School before arriving in Detroit. In 1881 David Hill’s son Anthony Pannill Bryce Sr., M.D., moved his family northward from Indiana to Chicago where he worked at Cook County Hospital while continuing his medical studies at Rush Medical College; he graduated with honors from Rush on June 2nd 1882. In 1884 he married Elizabeth Huffman Goodrich who became known throughout Chicago society for her philanthropic work on behalf of children with polio through her involvement with Drs Julius F Doremus and John Kolmer’s Illinois Society for Crippled Children. Dr Bryce’s first job after graduating included working as an assistant physician under Dr Doremus at Cook County Hospital; however during this time he was also pursuing his interest in neurology through study under Dr Frederick Peterson who practiced at Mercy hospital nearby.
