Morgan State University was founded on December 6, 1875 as a commercial school by an act of the Maryland General Assembly and named for War of 1812 hero James Madison Morgan. It was initially called “The Colored School for Teachers” at Baltimore City College (which later became known as City College), but was renamed as “Normal School No. 3″ by 1896. The first principal was Charles Haskins Townsend who served from 1877–1906 with one year off while he attended Harvard University’s summer session in 1895 to receive his master’s degree. In 1921 it became part of the then newly created state system of teacher training schools when it merged with The Training School at Towson under the administration of Ellen Sargent Kennedy (1870-1950) who became Dean until her death on January 2nd 1950.”
