Michigan State University

MSU has several programs that can help students learn video game design. These include a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Production and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Digital Media Design. Students who are interested in game design may also want to consider earning their Bachelor’s degree from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences or the College of Natural Science. Students who have already earned their bachelor’s degree can pursue one of these programs as well.

Students in the program will take courses such as [Game Design: Narrative/World] (ENGRD-5100), [Game Design: Game Engine Development] (ENGRD-5102), [Game Design: Modeling and Animation] (ENGRD-5101), and [Game Design: History and Theory] (ENGRD-5119). In order to apply for admission into these programs, you must submit an application through The Common Application or Coalition Application website along with an official transcript from your high school or college, along with any other supporting documents requested by MSU’s admissions office

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University is a private research university based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The university has a strong focus on robotics and computer science, so it’s no surprise that video game design is one of their strengths.

Carnegie Mellon University was ranked fifth in the nation for its undergraduate program by U.S. News & World Report and first among all public universities in 2019 as well as sixth overall among all graduate schools with 711 students enrolled (including both in-state and out-of-state).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT has a graduate program in video game design, as well as an undergraduate minor. The school’s reputation for video game design is well-known and strong; its programs are highly sought after by students and employers alike.

New York University

New York University’s Game Center offers a Master of Fine Arts in Game Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Design. They also offer a Graduate Certificate in Game Design.

The university was founded in 1831, which means it’s more than 200 years old as of this writing.

Drexel University

Drexel University is located in Philadelphia. Drexel University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in game design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in game design.

The Art Institute of Vancouver (AIV)

The Art Institute of Vancouver (AIV) is a private, for-profit university located in Vancouver, Canada. AIV offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Game Art and Design, which focuses on the development of video games. It also offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Game Design and Production that teaches students to create both the visual aspects and programming for video games. Finally, AIV offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Game Programming that focuses almost entirely on programming rather than design or art creation.

Northeastern University

Northeastern University is a private, coeducational university located in Boston, Massachusetts. The university was established in 1898 and has over 21,000 students.

The school’s undergraduate program offers a Bachelors of Science degree in Video Game Design and Development or Computer Sciences. Students learn how to create games using industry standard software including Maya, 3ds Max and Unity 3D game engine. Other courses include computer graphics animation principles; game design history; game design theory and methods; mechanics for game developers; production pipelines for games; programming languages such as Java or C++; level design principles & concepts; prototyping tools & technologies (Unity); scripting languages (C#).

Ringling College of Art & Design

Ringling College of Art & Design is a private college in Sarasota, Florida. It was founded in 1931 as the Sarasota School of Arts and Crafts by circus magnate John Ringling and his wife Mable. Ringling College was originally designed to train art teachers, but has since expanded its curriculum to include subjects such as animation, fine arts and graphic design. The school also offers specialized programs for children from 3-18 years old.
