For many years, the most widely accepted theory of how life began on Earth was called “theistic evolution.” Theistic evolutionists believed that God created the universe and used natural processes to bring about life. In recent decades, however, some scientists have begun to question this view and instead argued that God initiated the process of design by specially creating Adam and Eve as adults with fully formed bodies and minds. This viewpoint is known as young-earth creationism (YEC), or simply creationism.

Bob Jones University

Bob Jones University is a fundamentalist Christian university located in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. It was founded by Bob Jones, Sr. in 1927. The university is non-denominational and accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS).

The school’s official position on creationism was stated in 2006: “While BJU accepts evolution as a basic scientific principle, it does not accept evolution as substantiating atheistic world views such as naturalism or humanism.”

Columbia International University

Columbia International University (CIU) was founded in 1960 and is headquartered in Columbia, SC. It is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE).

The university offers two degrees that teach creationism as literal truth: a Bachelor of Arts in Bible and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. CIU also offers an Associates degree in Christian Ministry or Christian Education.

Bryan College

Bryan College, founded in 1927 by William Jennings Bryan and located in Dayton, Tennessee, is a Christian liberal arts college that teaches young earth creationism. In addition to its religious studies program, which offers a BA in Biblical Studies and also includes classes on World Religions and Philosophy & Ethics of Religion, Bryan offers degrees in Business Administration (BA), Elementary Education (BEd), Secondary Education (BS), and Teacher Leadership for Christian Schools (MATL).

Bryan’s student body numbers about 1,300 students with an average class size of 15 students. The school has an 11:1 student/faculty ratio and its tuition currently amounts to $22K per year.

New Saint Andrews College

New Saint Andrews College is located in Moscow, Idaho, and is affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. The school is known for its conservative values and teaches young earth creationism. It has a low acceptance rate of less than 20 percent as well as very strict rules of conduct that include mandatory chapel attendance three times per week, no alcohol consumption on or off campus and no dating between members of the opposite sex until they have been at New Saint Andrews College for at least one semester.

Veritas Evangelical Seminary

Veritas Evangelical Seminary is a Christian school in Colorado. It teaches young earth creationism, which holds that the universe was created by God around 6,000 years ago. It is a private school with an acceptance rate of just 10 percent, making it an institution of high prestige. Veritas offers a four-year program where you can earn bachelor’s degrees in either theology or biology.

• Young earth creationists believe the universe was created by God in six days. This includes all animal species and plants we see today, which they believe were made fully formed and ready for consumption by humans (even though plants need light from the sun to survive).
• There are no known fossils from dinosaurs or any other extinct creatures before about 4500 BC—and by some estimates that could be as many as 10 million years too late for young earth creationism.

As we’ve seen from the list above, creationism is deeply ingrained in many science programs across the country. Even some of our most prestigious schools, like Georgia Tech and Johns Hopkins University, have courses that teach young earth creationism as a scientific theory that can be debated alongside other theories like evolution. While this may be an upsetting development for some people who want all colleges to teach only science-based theories of origins, it’s important to remember that these institutions exist within a diverse society where all ideas are welcome.
