It was written by about 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 contributors. The Britannica is the English-language encyclopaedia/encyclopedia that was in print for 244 years, making it one of the longest continually published encyclopaedias in history. It was first published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh as three volumes. The encyclopaedia grew in size: between 1816 and 1826, it grew from 20 to 30 volumes, about 10 million words on 9500 pages. Its rising stature as a scholarly work helped recruit eminent contributors (who included Jeremy Bentham), and the 9th edition (1875–1889) and its successors did much to maintain its reputation as an excellent work of scholarship throughout the 20th century. In March 2012, Encyclopdia Britannica stopped publishing printed editions altogether by discontinuing their 600 year old print set
