Today in the History of BlackBoard
Blackboards are a simple, yet effective technology that have been used in classrooms for centuries. In the mid-1980s, the first computerized classroom was built by IBM, which consisted of a mainframe computer and 16 terminals connected by Ethernet. In 1997, Blackboard Inc. was incorporated in Washington D.C., bringing us to where we are now: with your BlackBoard Learn course pages that you log on to access your courses and assignments from home or elsewhere!
In Everglades University’s online classes, you will use Blackboard Learn to complete assignments and interact with your fellow students and professors about course material. You can also view announcements about campus events or important news from our staff members.

31 May 1981: Everglades University offers its first baccalaureate degree.
In May of 1981, Everglades University offered its first baccalaureate degree. The university, originally named the “South Florida Aeronautical College,” started out as a pilot training school in 1962 at a small airport near Boca Raton. But when it was discovered that more pilots were being trained than there were jobs available for them, the focus of the college was switched to business management and then later to computer science.
The first bachelor’s degree offered by the new South Florida Aeronautical University (as it was then called) was in business management. In fact, by 1983 all aeronautical courses had been removed from the curriculum and replaced with programs designed to prepare students for careers in business administration and other professional fields like computers or engineering technology.
31 May 1986: Florida’s 41st resident university is received by the State of Florida.
Florida is a state in the southeastern United States, bordered by Alabama and Georgia to the north and by the Gulf of Mexico to the west. Florida has more than 20 million residents, making it one of the most populous states in America. Florida is best known for its many beaches that attract millions of visitors every year.
In addition to those appealing features, Florida is also home to Everglades University.
