First off, they’re given an essay prompt that’s usually related to the fashion industry, and they have two weeks to write an essay in response. This isn’t just any old essay either; it’s scored by a member of FIDM staff using a rubric with more than 50 categories for grading.

Next up is the interview portion of the application, which also follows its own unique format. Students prepare a mock presentation on a subject related to their intended major that lasts about 20 minutes . And if all goes well in both these components, students can breathe easy knowing they’ve been accepted into FIDM!

Also keep in mind that while the admissions process may be tough, there were only 53 applicants per available spot last year—so even if you don’t get in right away, you could always apply again next year!

If you meet all these requirements, applying to FIDM is a smooth process. The following are the basics of what you’ll need to know:

  • Complete the application and mail it in (or submit it online) by April 1st. Although there is no fee to apply, potential students must submit an application form along with a nonrefundable $25 administration fee on or before this date. Students will also have to submit official transcripts from high school and any colleges or trade schools they’ve attended. If you haven’t graduated yet but are near completion, you’ll still have time to apply for courses starting that September; however, your offer of admission may be deferred until after graduation.
  • Submit required documents by May 20th. Along with your transcript, prospective students will also be required to send in ACT/SAT scores and letters of recommendation as well as proof of immunization against diseases such as tuberculosis and rubella (German measles). These items should all be sent via regular or express mail postmarked by this date.[3] Students who do not meet the above deadlines risk having their admissions offers rescinded if spots fill up during their wait for admission materials.[4]
  • Pay tuition fees by June 1st. Continuing education courses cost $1,200 per semester hour. Full-time programs run from September through December or March and tuition costs $8,500 per semester hour.[5] Tuition can be paid in three easy installments throughout the year—$2,000 at registration plus two payments of $5,250 due in January and February.[6] Payment plans start at $150 a month. Additional expenses like books[7], art supplies,[8], computers,[9] uniforms,[10] student fees,[11] insurance coverage[12], transportation,[13], meals[14], housing,[15], utilities,[16] cell phone service,[17] etc., may further increase yearly costs between $28,000–32000 dollars depending on factors

FIDM is a prestigious fashion school but it has a fairly low bar for acceptance.

In contrast, students who go through FIDM’s fashion design program have to jump through several hoops. The college has a competitive application process, typically accepting only 50% of its applicants and weeding out the rest based on GPA and portfolio quality. Each prospective student will get an interview with one of their admission counselors to see if they’re a good fit for their fashion design program.

Once students gain acceptance into the program, they go through several levels of schooling: Fashion Design 1 (six-month course), Fashion Design 2 (a six-month course), and Fashion Design 3 (an 18-month course). There are also programs that add onto these three initial courses such as Fashion Marketing and Merchandising and Textile Marketing and Merchandising.
