Kobe University

Kobe University offers a number of masters and PhD programs for international students.

Scholarships are available to both domestic and international students who have been accepted into the university. International students who qualify for any of these scholarships will be exempt from paying tuition fees or matriculation fees.

International applicants who wish to apply for research study must be proficient in the Japanese language. They must also pass the entrance examination held by each graduate school, as well as interview with a professor at that school before being accepted into the program.

Waseda University

Waseda University (早稲田大学 Waseda Daigaku, also called Sōdai or Waseda) is a private, independent, coeducational research university located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. It was founded by the samurai scholar and former Vice-Shogun Yoshida Shōin in 1882 as the Tōkyō Senmon Gakkō or Tōkyō College. It started with a focus on Western philosophy and social sciences, but soon became famous for its liberal arts program and later for its business school. Today it has ten faculties: Letters; Education; Political Science and Economics; Law; Commerce; Science and Engineering (applied science); Creative Science and Engineering (basic science); Hosei School of International Liberal Studies (Japanese international studies program); Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems (engineering school), Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering (science school).

The main campus is located in Shinjuku. The entire university consists of over 50 colleges spread across five campuses across Tokyo: Waseda Campus in Shinjuku, Okubo Campus in Shinjuku’s Okubo area, Nishi-Waseda Campus in Nishi-waseda area near Takadanobaba Station of JR lines), Honjo Campus near Ushigome Yanagicho Station of Tokyo Metro Tozai Line) Komaba III Campus in Meguro Ward’s Komaba area near Ebisu Station on the JR Yamanote Line). In addition to these four campuses, which are all within 5 km from each other,[4] there are satellite campuses throughout Japan located on behalf of each faculty.[5]

Meiji University

Meiji University is a private research university with campuses in Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan. It is part of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Global 30” Project to globalize higher education. The university takes its name from the Meiji era, during which its founding took place.

Undergraduate courses are taught at its Shirokanedai campus in Tokyo. Graduate courses are held at the Ichigaya campus (Faculty of Law), Surugadai campus (Faculty of Commerce) and Ikuta Campus (Graduate School).

The university has three campuses: Surugadai Campus (“Surudai”) is located in Kanda-Surugadai; Ichigaya Campus (“Ichigayadai”) is located in Ichigaya; and Shirokane Campus (“Shirokanedai”) is located in Minato Ward.

The Shirokane Campus covers a total area of 18 acres. The Nakano Campus covers an area of 30 acres while the Surugadai campus covers a total area of 20 acres.

The term fully funded masters program refers to a prolonged course of study that leads to a master’s degree. The term itself is somewhat misleading, however, as it does not necessarily mean that the program is free of tuition costs for all students. A school might offer a fully funded masters program and provide full scholarships to only 25% of its students, while leaving the remaining 75% with partial or no scholarships. These students would still be attending a fully funded masters program but would need to pay tuition out-of-pocket or use other financial assistance options.

In general, an individual who wants to attend graduate school can choose from three types of funding:

• Fully funded – A student who is awarded a full scholarship will have their entire tuition covered by the university they attend. Some programs also cover books and living expenses in addition to tuition.
• Partially funded – A student who receives partial funding may have their tuition covered in part by their university as opposed to entirely receiving this coverage as one would if they were awarded a full scholarship.
• Self-funded – A student who funds their own education will generally pay out-of-pocket for their tuition and any other related expenses including books and living costs.
