A fully funded PhD position is available in the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Cretan Inter-University Graduate Program “Information Technologies” (ITI).

The Institute of Computer Science (ICS), a research institute of FORTH, is located in Heraklion and has over 130 full-time researchers organized in 3 research departments: 1) Artificial Intelligence and Information Analysis Group (AIIA), 2) Human Centered Computing Group (HCC), 3) Networking and Multimedia Department. The computer science department was ranked 1st among similar units in Greece by the National Council for Research & Technology scoring system. In addition to its scientific staff, ICS has several undergraduate students doing their thesis work there, as well as about 30 Phd candidates.

The main research interests include: artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analysis and knowledge discovery, natural language processing, information retrieval modeling and semantic representation on the Web; digital libraries; human-computer interaction; multimodal interfaces; virtual reality; computer graphics; ubiquitous computing; networking technologies; internet applications. Crete is an island with rich cultural tradition and history that offers both professional opportunities as well as many opportunities to enjoy outdoor life

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Cretan Inter-University Graduate Program “Information Technologies” (ITI).

Applicants will be enrolled in the Cretan Inter-University Graduate Program “Information Technologies” (ITI), http://iti.edu.gr/, which offers a four-year PhD program, jointly run by the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete, the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH, and the Department of Electronic Engineering of Technical University of Crete. The PhD thesis will be prepared with co-supervision by both university departments and supervised by Dr. Timos Sellis, Associate Professor at FORTH ICS and Dr. Spiros Skiadopoulos, Assistant Professor at UoC CSD.

The successful applicant will have access to all infrastructures and resources provided by both institutions like high performance computing clusters with GPUs and TPUs, large disk storage systems as well as data centers located in Heraklion (ICS/FORTH) and Rethymnon (UOC).

The focus of research will be on distributed data processing through clusters and clouds.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Cretan Inter-University Graduate Program “Information Technologies” (ITI, http://iti.uoc.gr/), which is funded by the European Social Fund and National Resources under the Operational Programme “Education and Lifelong Learning” of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013.

The focus of research will be on distributed data processing through clusters and clouds, with emphasis on efficiency and scalability in order to handle large volumes of data. Programming skills and experience in cloud computing are highly appreciated, but not mandatory. Prior knowledge of basic concepts in databases and information retrieval is considered a plus, but not required.

Programming skills and experience in cloud computing are highly appreciated.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in computer science and excellent programming skills. A good understanding of cloud computing is required, and experience with the Kubernetes container platform and other cloud native technologies will be highly appreciated.

Other valuable skills or experience include familiarity with DevOps practices, the microservices architecture, the usage of web services and their APIs (e.g., RESTful services), software-defined networking, data analysis tools such as Apache Spark, deep learning frameworks like Keras/TensorFlow/PyTorch, working knowledge of dependency injection frameworks like Spring Boot or Guice, a specific problem domain knowledge (e.g., in health care or automotive), and ability to work in a distributed team.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Michael G. Olympios (olympios@ics.forth.gr) and send a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and contact information for two referees.

  • Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but priority will be given to those received by February 10, 2017.
  • Candidates are expected to have or work towards obtaining an MSc in Computer Science or equivalent degree with strong software development skills and excellent programming abilities in C/C++/Java (or a similar modern language). Experience with scripting languages such as Python/Ruby is desirable and experience on operating system internals will also be considered an advantage.

We have a fully funded PhD position available at our institute

Position: Investigating how to improve the resolution of surface reconstructions in 3D electron microscopy

3D electron microscopy is a method to determine the structure of large macromolecules. A significant challenge in this field is determining the resolution at which the molecules can be studied. In this PhD project, you will work on improving our knowledge on how to obtain high-resolution information from 3D reconstructions by determination of their quality.

The position is fully funded, with a maximum duration of 4 years. The starting date is 1 February 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
