The government of Japan is awarding a fully-funded undergraduate scholoarship to students from selected ASEAN and SAARC countries.

Japanese Government Scholarship

The Government of Japan is awarding fully-funded undergraduate scholarship to students from selected ASEAN and SAARC countries. The scholarship will cover for the tuition fee, admission fee and other fees, but does not cover living expenses, travel costs and book costs. Candidates must apply for the Japanese language course (or Japanese university) by themselves and be accepted first before applying for the MEXT scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2018.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligible applicant must be born between April 2, 1997 and April 1, 2004. The applicant must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines or Thailand. Applicants should not be an employee or relative of an employee at Asian Development Bank (ADB) or ADB Institute.

Must have been born between April 2, 1997 and April 1, 2004

  • Students who were born between April 2, 1997 and April 1, 2004 are eligible to apply.
  • Students must be enrolled at a university or college in the Republic of Korea.
  • Students must be citizens of the Republic of Korea and hold Korean citizenship only (dual citizens are not eligible).

Must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka or Thailand.

You must not be living in Japan.

You must have been recognized as having the ability to study at a Japanese university.

Have no family members residing in Japan.

  • Have no family members residing in Japan. ‘Family members’ refer to blood relatives and not relatives by marriage. Family members who do not reside in Japan are acceptable. Family members who are temporary residents of Japan (e.g., international students) are not acceptable under this criteria.

Not be accompanying family members who are residing in Japan.

  • Not be accompanying a family member currently residing in Japan.
  • Not be being accompanied by a family member who is already residing in Japan.
  • Not have resided in Japan for at least 6 months since April 1, 2020.

Have been recognized as having the ability to study at a Japanese university under the Japanese education system in terms of academic performance and personality.

You must be recognized by an authorized Japanese university as having the ability to study at a Japanese university under the Japanese education system in terms of academic performance and personality.

  • Must be able to study in Japan during the scholarship period.
  • Must enroll in an undergraduate course at a Japanese university upon arrival in Japan
  • Have a sincere desire to learn Japan’s language, culture and society.
  • Must be willing to contribute to international understanding, friendly relationships between your home country and Japan after graduation from a Japanese university through educational or socio-economic activities.

A person whose attendance at educational institutions within Japan was not funded by the Japanese government or companies (excluding short-term training).

If you are currently studying in a Japanese university under a full scholarship provided by the Japanese government, local public body, company, etc., your application will not be accepted.
