University of Crete (UniCrete)

The University of Crete (UniCrete) is a public university in Heraklion, Greece. It is the country’s third largest university in terms of student enrolment, with a total of 17000 undergraduate students and 3000 postgraduate students. The university consists of four schools (Faculties), comprising 23 departments which are all located at the city of Rethymno except for the department and administration buildings which are located at Heraklion.

A recent study by the International Student Barometer showed that international students in Greece rate the experience very highly overall and especially in terms of learning. With more than 81,000 students, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is one of the largest universities in Europe. Established in 1837, this university is one of the oldest modern higher education institutions in the world. It is located in the center of Athens, just a 15-minute walk from Syntagma Square. The main campus houses 60 academic departments offering courses to international students at various levels.

The university has a total academic staff of approximately 1,500. The student to faculty ratio is quite high—there are about 55 students for every teacher—but this should not be a problem if you choose your courses carefully and attend them regularly.

University of Ioannina (UOI)

University of Ioannina (UOI) is the third largest university in Greece with a student population of approximately 20,000. It was founded in 1964 by the former Prime Minister, Georgios Papandreou, and it is located in the modern city of Ioannina. The university offers undergraduate programs, as well as research and postgraduate programs that are recognized internationally.

The mission of UOI is to provide high quality education and to produce research that contributes to innovation and social development. There are 12 schools under UOI: agriculture, agrarian sciences, veterinary medicine, science and technology, applied arts & technology sciences, social sciences & humanities studies, theology studies (school number 6), economics & regional development studies (school number 7), health sciences (school number 8), education sciences & early childhood education studies (school number 9), physical education and sports science studies (school 10) and music science & art studies (school 11).

The university has a lot to offer students from all over the world. With its modern buildings and laboratories for teaching purposes – such as computer labs – students will find themselves studying at one of the best universities in Greece for international students. It has also been found that there are currently a lot more life-long learning opportunities available at UOI than ever before. Students can enroll on ‘short’ basic courses or undertake more advanced study through master’s or PhD degree programs offered at the university.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is situated in Central Macedonia, Greece, and is the largest university in Greece. It has a total number of 80,000 students and 1,700 academic staff members.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is ranked among the best universities in Europe and around the world. It was ranked at the top positions in all fields: natural sciences (176th), medical sciences and life sciences (251st-300th), engineering, technology and computer science (401st-450th), social sciences and management (401st-450th) and humanities (401st-450th).

It offers numerous courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Some of these courses are taught entirely in English for international students who wish to study at AUTH.

The Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Piraeus was founded in 1929. It has 6 faculties: Business Administration, Business Informatics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics, Maritime Studies, Health and Welfare Services. Currently there are 19000 students attending the institution and it employs 681 professors.

The Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEIAthens) is a public institute of tertiary education in Athens, Greece. Founded in 1983, it has eight departments and provides undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the fields of technology, applied sciences and fine arts. The Department of Informatics was established in 1987 under the supervision of Professor K. Michalopoulos. The Department offers undergraduate studies leading to a Bachelor’s degree and postgraduate studies leading to a Master’s degree.

The Agricultural University of Athens (AUAth) is one of the oldest and most esteemed institutions of higher learning in Greece.
