Hospital Of University Of Pennsylvania

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest and most respected hospitals in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1765 by the great physician John Morgan, who also founded the Pennsylvania Hospital for Quakers and other members of their faith. The hospital was originally located on 4th Street between Walnut Street and High Street (now Broad Street) in what is now Old City Philadelphia. At its founding, it was called “The Hospital in the Woods” because it was surrounded by trees on all sides; it also had a farm for self-sustainability purposes. Today, HUP is located at 3400 Civic Center Boulevard in West Philadelphia near Penn’s campus; it’s across from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), which is another top medical school hospital with many similarities to HUP).
