We are a small team of professionals who work with businesses to help them create and maintain their online presence. We build websites, design logos, and manage social media campaigns for our clients. The work we do is important because it helps businesses succeed by connecting them with their target audience in a meaningful way.
We want to bring on interns who want to learn about how businesses use the internet to market themselves and grow their customer base. We believe that high school students are at the perfect age to start learning how this process works from the ground up, so they can use their knowledge as they go into college or even after graduation, when they begin working full time!
We’ve been working with interns before—and it’s been great! Our interns have learned a lot while they’ve been here, but also helped us improve our services and deliver better results for our clients.

Best Internships for High School Students 2019
Internships are usually associated with college and university students, but high school students can also have access to these experiences. These internships are providing learning, networking and job experience that can boost their resume in the future, especially for college applications.
In short, for high school students, working as an intern can an extremely valuable experience that will surely pay off in the future. We have compiled a list of what we think are great internships aimed at high school students, from well-established organizations that will enrich even more the learning and working experience there.
Most of them take place over the summer, and you can choose from full-time or part-time internships. Depending on the type of internship you go for, it can be a paid or unpaid job and it’s likely that you’ll get the same onboarding process as a regular employee of the company.
Bank of America’s Student Leaders Program
This internship reaches out to 225 high school juniors and seniors, that are community-minded and connects them with paid summer internships at local non-profit organizations. A select few interns will also get to attend a summit held in Washington D.C. for national leaders.
Applications for this program open up the fall before the summer you want to apply for. You need to hand in a recommendation letter signed by a teacher, administrator or counselor at your school.
Microsoft
This is a great internship for those that want to learn about computer programming and computer science. It does have a series of requirements, though, that include:
- Knowledge at handling Microsoft Office and emails.
- Working knowledge of HTML.
- This is a full-time internship (40 hours per week) for 10 weeks.
- Resume and letter of recommendation.
- Be located in the western Washington state area.
If you’re looking at STEM fields and love computers, an internship at Microsoft would be an amazing opportunity.
NASA
This is another great chance for students that are interested in STEM disciplines. It provides interns with unique operational experiences and NASA-related research. Interns will work with a mentor while at the same time helping in the operation of a NASA facility and the advancement of missions.
For this internship you will need:
- To be 16 or older.
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Have a GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4.0 scale.
These internships are available in the summer, spring, and fall.
Student Research Internship Program at the Scripps Translational Science Institute
For those interested in the genetic/genomic studies as well as translational research, this internship can be of great insight and learning.
They will work with a team of scientists, some at the top of their fields and internationally renowned for research. The goal of this internship is to prepare these young scientists to become future leaders in translational science.
You’ll have a mentor that will be assigned to you depending on your interests and work in a lab. There will be seminars every week which you will have to attend, as well as develop a research project and present it.
The requirements for this internship include:
- Be 16 or older.
- Complete a drug screening (for those over 18) and a background check.
- Commit to at least 8 weeks with the program.
Aristotle Circle Marketing and Communications Internship
For the future journalists or those wanting a career in marketing, then you should take a look at this internship.
The students will have to report and write articles on a regular basis on the company’s blog, social media updates, come up with and pitch ideas and topics and work with the marketing manager. For those that perform particularly well, they will write full-length features and be promoted in the newsletter.
For those that want to apply, some of the requirements are:
- Be a high school junior or first-semester senior.
- Provide a letter where you talk about your school, what grade you’re in, and your available days, as well as explain a bit why you’re interested in this internship.
- Provide writing samples.
Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program
This is a paid summer mentoring program to educate and inspire students about management and fisheries science. This internship is sponsored by the American Fisheries Society (AFS) and it matches selected students with mentors that will give them hands-on experience on fisheries science in either a freshwater or marine setting. Those that complete the program will receive a $4,000 scholarship.
This program is particularly interested in students from groups that are underrepresented in the fisheries professions, including minorities and women.
Those that apply must:
- Participate for at least 8 weeks in the program.
- Provide a letter of recommendation and submit transcripts.
- Be willing to work 40 hours per week.
The Smithsonian
The Smithsonian has a lot of internship opportunities, in areas like natural history, art history, human resources and much more. You can choose to apply for a specific opportunity or just be included in the General Smithsonian Internship Pool in case you’re up for anything they might offer and not a particular area. Be warned that these are very coveted internships and there’s a lot of competition.
Interns will be guided by a mentor that will give them hands-on experience and they can last for up to six months. If everything goes well, you can even be reappointed for another term.
If you want to apply, you must meet the following requirements:
- Live in the Washington, D.C. area.
- Be 14 or older.
- Those that are under 18 need a signed permission from a parent or legal guardian.
The Constitutional Rights Foundation
This foundation looks to help the nation’s youth have a deeper understanding of citizenship through values expressed in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as well as educate these young people so that they become responsible participants of the society.
This internship is located in Los Angeles, and those high school students that are accepted will be placed in local corporations, law firms, government agencies, or non-profit organizations. They will be assigned according to the skills and interests of each individual.
Some of the requirements include:
- Writing an essay.
- Be a Los Angeles resident.
- Submit two letters of recommendation and a transcript.
- Complete interviews.
- Provide proof that the applicant participated in the Free/Reduced Meals Program.
Those that are selected will also receive SAT prep for free and be counseling on college admissions.
South Middlesex Opportunity Council
The goal of this organization is to improve the lives of low-income and disadvantaged individuals and their families by helping them through counseling and education. During the internships, the students will provide services, as well as build a support system in the community.
There are several areas in which the interns can participate and help, such as nutrition services, childcare, behavioral healthcare, and more. The work schedule is usually between 5 and 20 hours per week, but it can be more if you want.
To be accepted, the applicant must:
- Earn credit for participating.
- Complete a background check.
- Be approved by their high school.
New York Historical Society
The New York Historical Society offers internships to high school students that are interested in careers in museum, library and history fields. They will work with staff to develop public speaking and leadership and deepen their understanding of American history and art.
Some of the requirements include:
- Be a New York resident.
- Submit the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
- Submit letters of recommendation and an interview.
