Uppsala University in Sweden

Uppsala University is a public research university located in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded by King Gustavus Adolphus in 1477, the University is one of the oldest universities in Europe and has more than 33,000 students; it also offers about 1,400 international master’s programs taught in English across its campuses.

Uppsala University’s Bachelor of Laws program consists of two parts: one foundation year and three years of advanced study. During the first year (which can be taken before or after you complete your bachelor’s degree), you’ll cover the basics of constitutional law, criminal law, contract law, torts and tax law. Once you’ve completed this foundation coursework, you’ll receive a Certificate of Transferable Credits that will enable you to obtain an exemption for corresponding courses at any other Swedish university as well as some universities abroad.

The school has a strong reputation throughout Europe; among Uppsala graduates are Carl XVI Gustaf (King of Sweden), Björn Ulvaeus (one-fourth of ABBA) and Thorbjørn Jagland (Chairman of the Nobel Prize Committee).

• The first thing to know about European law schools is that there are a lot of them and that many offer English-taught programs, so it’s possible to study international and comparative law without having to learn any other languages first. Not all European law schools teach in English, but there are plenty of options across the continent that do.
• Consider going to a school with an English-taught program for your first year, then switch over to a different language track once you get settled in and feel like you can handle it. Some programs also offer dual degrees, so you could earn two degrees in two different countries while only spending three years in school rather than four or five going the traditional route and earning just one degree at home.
