Course Description:
You will be required to take courses in the medical and surgical arena, as well as in pediatrics, mental health and maternal/infant health. In order to reinforce what you learn in these classes, you will also need to participate in a clinical rotation at a local hospital or other approved facility under the guidance of an LPN preceptor. The coursework for this program is designed so that you will be able to work part-time (if necessary) while completing your studies.
Once you have completed all of your coursework, you must then apply for your LPN license from the state nursing board where you wish to practice. To do this, you are required to submit an application along with a fee and provide proof of having graduated from an accredited nursing program. You may also need to submit fingerprints and undergo a background check prior to being approved for licensure.

This program is designed to prepare students for one of the most rapidly growing health care occupations – Licensed Practical Nurse. The LPN license allows you to practice in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes and home care.
The 6-month LPN Program will prepare you for your new career through classroom lectures, labs and clinical experience. You will be able to apply what you have learned in the classroom while working with patients. This hands-on approach enhances the learning process and gives you confidence when entering the workplace. You will learn how to administer medications, take vital signs, perform catheterizations and achieve many other skills required in your daily work environment.
If you want to continue your education, our LPN Program can also serve as a stepping stone towards becoming an RN (Registered Nurse) through our 2+1 articulation agreement with Ulster BOCES or our RN Degree Completion Program at Columbia-Greene Community College
The student is prepared to provide direct patient care in a variety of health care settings, including nursing homes and hospitals.
The Practical Nursing (PN) program prepares students to provide direct patient care. Students will have opportunities to progress from simple to complex nursing tasks and become competent in the provision of quality care. The LPN is positioned as a team member collaborating with the Registered Nurse, doctor and other health care providers. The student is prepared to provide direct patient care in a variety of health care settings, including nursing homes and hospitals. Graduates work under the supervision of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and physicians.
The Practical Nursing Program builds upon knowledge gained during completion of prerequisite courses and is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
A graduate will be qualified for employment as a licensed practical nurse under the supervision of an RN or physician, or may continue into the third year of our three-year Nursing Program, leading to a BS in Nursing.
Core courses include:
- Health Assessment
- Professional Aspects of Nursing (includes legal and ethical aspects of nursing)
- Adult Health I: Medical-Surgical Nursing (includes pharmacology, nutrition, pathophysiology)
- Adult Health II: Medical-Surgical Nursing (additional clinical experience in a medical surgical setting)
A graduate will be qualified for employment as a licensed practical nurse under the supervision of an RN or physician, or may continue into the third year of our three-year Nursing Program, leading to a BS in Nursing.

The LPN program is 6 months long, and offers three courses that are taken at the same time:
Human Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Vital Signs)
Fundamentals of Nursing (Medication Administration, IV Therapy)
Practicum (hands on experience in a healthcare facility supervised by an RN).

The LPN 6 month program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for licensure and will be qualified for entry-level positions in health care facilities. They may also continue their studies into a 3 year Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing if they choose.
Course descriptions include Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and Surgical Nursing. Graduates of the program will be able to perform basic patient care skills and demonstrate proficient clinical judgment while maintaining professional standards. The clinical portion of the course is held at an approved medical facility, where students must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher to pass.
