The University of Florida is a public research university located in Gainesville, Florida. The university has more than 50,000 students and awards more than 2,000 degrees each year to undergraduates and graduates, making it one of the largest universities in the United States. It is also one of only three universities to hold membership in all four major athletics associations: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II (Charter Member), NAIA and NCCAA.
The University of Florida was founded in 1853 by Henry Holland Buckman and Jonathan Maxcy. Buckman was a professor of medicine at Nashville Medical College who later became the first president of the University of Florida after moving to Gainesville with his family to establish a new town called “Oakland.” Maxcy made his fortune as secretary and treasurer of a railroad company that ran through Gainesville without any stops or stations until reaching Jacksonville at its northern terminus point on the St Johns River which today still remains as part of CN’s trans-Canada network while Maxcy himself remained alive until age 90 when he passed away on June 15th 1906 from natural causes related mostly due to having suffered from an old case where he had been shot in head during Civil War Battle Of Gettysburg Pennsylvania but still survived somehow despite being injured when doctors operated for an hour trying desperately save him but their efforts were not enough so sadly died within minutes after leaving this world forever
