The Board’s overall mission is to ensure that registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and advanced practice registered nurses are qualified to perform their jobs safely. As such, it is important for nurses who work in Maryland to know the requirements regarding license renewal and what happens when their license expires.

1. The Board of Nursing is the licensing and regulating body for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and advanced practice registered nurses. The Board consists of 15 members who are appointed by the Governor with Senate confirmation. The Governor appoints five members from each congressional district; three members with substantial administrative experience in health care; two consumer representatives; one nurse practitioner representative; one licensed practical nurse representative; and one member who represents hospitals or other medical facilities in the state.

3. How do I renew my Maryland nursing license?

You may renew your Maryland nursing license by one of the following methods:

  • Online. Log in to your account on the Maryland Board of Nursing website and renew online.
  • By mail. Download a renewal application from the Maryland Board of Nursing website, complete it and send it to:

The license renewal period begins every year on December 16th and ends on October 31st of the following year. You will receive an email 60 days before your license expires with instructions on how to renew online. If your license expires in less than 60 days you may renew online now or submit a paper application by mail. DO NOT SEND CASH IN THE MAIL .

4. To keep your Maryland nursing license current, you must renew it by October 30th of every other year.

It’s important to note that the renewal period for your nursing license is not the same as the term of your license. Your initial license will have an expiration date of two years, but you can renew it up to 60 days before that time expires. You may also be asked to renew earlier than expected if your current license is close to expiring or has already expired.

To keep your Maryland nursing license current, you must renew it by October 30th of every other year. However, if there are extenuating circumstances preventing you from completing this process within this timeframe (for example, being hospitalized), we can consider granting an extension beyond October 30th upon request and approval from our office staff.

You can renew your MD nursing license online or by mail. You will need to complete an application form and pay the renewal fee of $86.00, which is due on or before October 30th every other year.
