Program Description: The Midwifery Program at Sam Houston State University offers a planned sequence of courses required for certification as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and is approved by the North American Registry of Midwives, Inc. (NARM), a national certification agency. Students will participate in didactic classes, clinical rotations, and preceptorships to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to pass the NARM exam and meet Texas state laws regarding midwifery education.
This program is offered through distance learning using video conferencing technology. All students must be available to participate in the clinical rotation portion of the program onsite in Huntsville during specific dates each semester. To assist with travel expenses, SHSU will reimburse mileage for one round-trip intercity trip per semester at .50/mile or provide reimbursement for an airplane ticket and public transportation costs up to $350/semester if purchased 21 days prior to travel date. Students who cannot attend class onsite or who live outside Texas are not eligible for admission into this program at this time.
To apply: Submit all documentation directly to SHSU Graduate Studies Office including GRE scores from within last five years that meet minimum requirements (verbal score > 402; quantitative score > 530; analytical writing score > 3), two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with applicant’s academic ability, writing proficiency sample demonstrating applicant’s ability to write research papers using APA style formatting (the writing proficiency sample should be 1-2 pages long), statement of career goals that also includes reasons why applicant wants a degree in Midwifery and any other information promoting successful completion of graduate studies, copy of current RN license or proof of application submitted
