Section 2
Nursing education in the USA.
Nursing education in the United States has evolved over time and varies from state to state. Nursing is a support profession for the medical profession. The formal study of nursing began as early as the middle ages with Florence Nightingale, who founded modern nursing, and Elizabeth Blackwell, who was responsible for founding the first nursing school in America. As nurses were traditionally women, their education was not seen as important until they gained more stature in society.[18] Nursing schools in America today are accredited through professional councils such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Although many nurses choose to go through a two-year associate degree program at a community college or hospital school of nursing, most nurses go on to get a bachelor’s degree or higher. Nurses with bachelor’s degrees typically move into management positions while those with master’s degrees or doctorates often become specialized nurse practitioners or nurse anesthetists. In recent years it has become common for some nurses to continue their education and pursue an advanced practice doctoral degree such as a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP), Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing, Doctorate of Education (EdD) in Nursing Education, or Doctorate of Health Science (DHSc).[19][20]
Individuals are eligible to apply for licensure after graduating from an approved nursing program and passing either the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) examination or Practical Nurse NCLEX-PN examination.[21]
