Nursing school requirements for international students
As an international student in the U.S., you must take certain additional steps to gain admission to a nursing degree program.
- English proficiency: While some schools may consider a generous TOEFL score, others may require that you enroll in their intensive English prep course first.
- Nursing prerequisites: Your transcripts should show completion of the usual prerequisites for nursing school, including biology and chemistry courses with labs.
- Meet the school’s GPA requirement: If your transcripts are from another country, most schools will include your GPA from your previous institution on their admissions materials too.
- Obtain a student visa: You’ll need to present documentation of acceptance into a nursing or other healthcare program as well as proof of your ability to pay for all expenses related to it.
- Show proof of health insurance: Many colleges will not admit students unless they show proof that they’re covered by health insurance while attending classes there.
- Complete all required immunization: This includes vaccinations against measles and other contagious diseases; talk to the nurse at your school’s administrative office if you’re unsure whether you’ve received all the necessary ones already or not. These requirements can change somewhat based on state law and university policy, so be sure to investigate what your chosen institution asks before applying there!

Nursing school requirements for international students from non-English speaking countries
If you are an international student from a country where English is not the native language, you have to have certification that proves your English skills.
In order to prove your proficiency in spoken and written English, you must take and pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
The TOEFL tests how well you understand North American English and how well you combine your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
To prepare for the TOEFL test:
Take an official practice test
Take an unofficial practice test
Use flashcards to study vocabulary
Application Fees
The application fee is often around $50 to $100, and it’s usually non-refundable. You usually pay it when you submit your completed application.
If you can’t afford the fee, you may be able to get a waiver from the university by proving that paying the fee would cause financial hardship for you or your family.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for most international students who want to attend graduate programs in the United States. The TOEFL measures your listening, reading, writing and speaking abilities in English. There are two formats of the TOEFL: paper-based and internet-based. The paper test is based on a scale of 1 to 6 while the internet test is based on a scale of 0 to 120.
To get into nursing school, you’ll need to earn an average score of 90 on the internet-based test, but it’s recommended that you aim for about 100 or higher, which falls in the advanced category. You can take the exam once every 12 days and up to 30 times in your lifetime—so don’t be afraid if you don’t do well on your first try! Registration for the exam is available online through www.toeflgoanywhere.org where you can also find more information about how to prepare for this important admission requirement.
Do your homework on the nursing school that you’re applying.
Before you apply to your top program, make sure that you know everything there is to know about what it takes to get in. This will help you understand the requirements of a particular program, as well as any country or state-specific rules and policies. In addition, some countries have their own visa requirements for international students. Knowing the country’s immigration requirements can be very helpful in planning for your move abroad.
There are many factors to consider when deciding if an institution will offer a good educational experience for international students: class size, location, graduate outcomes, cost of living and more. The most important factor is whether or not the school is accredited since accreditation status affects many aspects of its programs’ curriculum and quality standards.
