University of Auckland – Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs)

The Bachelor of Nursing is a four year degree program that provides a solid foundation in nursing knowledge and skills, with an emphasis on the development of undergraduate nurses as lifelong learners.

This course provides three graduate entry majors: Health Science Major, Biological Science Major and Nursing Major. The Health Science and Biological Science Majors are flexible programs that allow students to combine study in nursing with other health related disciplines. The Nursing Major is for those students wishing to become registered nurses.

All majors include work placements in various clinical settings, including general hospitals and community settings such as GP clinics. Graduates of this program will be eligible to become a registered nurse in New Zealand.

WINTEC – Diploma in Nursing (Level 5)

Study at Wintec’s Diploma in Nursing course and gain the knowledge, skills and competencies required to become a registered nurse in New Zealand.

This programme is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand and accredited by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. It will equip you with practical clinical experience at one of Wintec’s partner hospitals or healthcare facilities, as well as academic learning in theory-based subjects such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, psychology, health promotion and ethics.

If you’re not yet a registered nurse but would like to work towards it while starting your career immediately, this programme includes a bridging section that will allow you to achieve registration after completing all requirements. All students undertake at least 800 hours of clinical placement over the duration of their study with Wintec.

Massey University – Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery

The bachelor of nursing/bachelor of midwifery is a four-year undergraduate degree in Albany. It’s a combined degree – you can choose to complete either the bachelor of nursing or the bachelor of midwifery, or both. The degrees are taught in English. This degree is full time, and will take you three years to complete (or four if you choose to do both). It’s offered by the school of Nursing at Massey University’s College of Health.

University of Canterbury – Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Clinical Nursing)

• The University of Canterbury offers a six-month postgraduate certificate in Clinical Nursing that’s designed to help international students gain clinical experience and observe the nursing profession in New Zealand
• This programme is specifically designed for nurses who want to practice in New Zealand, and is suitable for those who have completed their nursing qualification at an approved institution overseas
• You’ll be studying full-time alongside New Zealand nurses in various health settings as you complete placements in acute, ambulatory care, mental health, community health or managing chronic illness
• The programme has three intakes per year: March, June and September
• Fees are $3,500

AUT University – Bachelor of Nursing

AUT University – Bachelor of Nursing programme description:

This programme is designed for you to meet the requirements for registration as a nurse in New Zealand. You’ll learn to practise nursing with culturally diverse clients across all age groups, from neonatal through childhood to adulthood and older adulthood. The programme has a strong emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention, with an underpinning philosophy of person-centred care and client empowerment. We pay particular attention to working alongside clients who have multiple chronic conditions or are experiencing social inequity and marginalisation.

You’ll gain the knowledge and skills required to work in any nursing field, including acute clinical settings, primary health care and mental health settings. After completing your degree you’ll be eligible to apply for registration as a registered nurse in New Zealand (subject to requirements set by the Nursing Council of New Zealand).

Programme duration:

3 years full time/6 years part time (full time accelerated option available)

Massey University – Bachelor of Midwifery

If you’re looking to study in New Zealand, Massey University’s Bachelor of Midwifery program is something you should consider. The university’s midwifery program is a three year, full-time degree in which students learn with others and from others. It’s taught in Semester 1 only and takes place at the Manawatu campus.

Canterbury District Health Board – Nurses’ Graduate Programmes

If you are planning to travel to Christchurch, New Zealand from abroad to undertake a nursing course, then international students can apply for the one year Canterbury DHB Nurses’ Graduate Programme. The process of enrolling in this programme is not difficult and allows international students to secure their visas while they are still overseas. This graduate programme is suitable for those students who have completed a nursing degree or have been registered as a nurse in another country.

To be eligible for the Canterbury DHB Nurses’ Graduate Programme, you must:

• Have at least 2 years of clinical experience as a registered nurse;
• Hold an unrestricted current license or registration as a registered nurse in your home country. You must hold prescriptive authority if it is available at your level of practice;
• Be fluent in English (IELTS score of 7.0 overall with no band less than 7);
• Have a passport that will remain valid for at least 18 months from the date that you are due to arrive in New Zealand;
• Have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay; and – Obtain medical and criminal records checks prior to arrival into New Zealand

Manukau Institute of Technology – Bachelor of Nursing (Level 7) with Honours

This three-year degree offers a comprehensive introduction to general and mental health nursing, as well as nursing for young people, families, older people and those with disabilities. With your choice of four majors—general nursing, disability support or mental health and addiction—you’ll graduate with the skills you need to pursue a career in the field of your choice.

You will also be trained in public health promotion and practice management, as well as being given the opportunity to apply your learning in a simulated clinical environment before going on an eight-week placement at the end of year two (the equivalent of 120 credits).

In year three you’ll gain further practical experience through placements at one of our partner facilities (the equivalent of 120 credits). After completing these you can choose an additional major from those listed above or continue with general nursing.
