The Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Afikpo was established in 1952 by the colonial government for training assistant nurses. The college was under the control of the Eastern Nigeria Government until 1966 when a bill was passed for its take over by the federal government. The college is located in Ebonyi State, South Eastern part of Nigeria.

The school has a student population of about 1,000 students with a teaching staff strength that exceeds 60 academic staff. The institution offers courses at undergraduate and certificate level to students from different parts of the country who are eligible to enroll as well as international students who wish to pursue their nursing career in Nigeria.

There are three schools within the institution namely: School of Nursing (SON), School of Midwifery (SOM) and Post Basic Midwifery Programme (PBM).
