Julie is getting her nursing degree from a college in Texas.

Julie is a student at Texas State University-San Marcos and will be graduating from the nursing program in May of 2021. Julie loves her school and has found that she loves nursing even more, especially since she gets to interact with patients every day. The only problem is that she’s worried about the job search process after graduation, since there are so many applicants for each new position.

She’s realized that having a career she cares about makes it so much easier for her to keep her motivation up all the time.

“I needed to find a career path that would give me a sense of purpose, that would make me feel like I was making a difference in the world. It’s important for your personal fulfillment to feel like you are doing something that is bigger than yourself.”

She’s hoping to graduate next year and take a job at a nursing home near her parents.

Kelly’s mother has been her biggest cheerleader, she says.

“She’s been behind me no matter what I do,” Kelly says. “I’m just like my mom.”

Kelly is pursuing a nursing degree at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

“I’ve always loved helping people,” Kelly says. “If you can help them get back to the way they were before they got sick, then you’re doing God’s work.”

Her parents are excited about the idea, but she thinks that might just be because they want her to move back to her hometown.

Your parents may be excited about this possibility, but that might just be because they want you to come home. If you have a good relationship with your parents, you probably know if they are supportive of the career path you have chosen for yourself or not. It can be hard not to let them influence your decision making when it comes down to the wire. But, at the end of the day, it’s up to what will make you happy in your career and in your life in general.

As a nursing student, you’re bound to have some significant expenses, so you’ll need to consider those before making any final decisions about where you go to school. Of course, there are a variety of different paths that nurses can take, so it’s difficult for us to give specific and comprehensive advice about finances. However, in general terms, we’d advise identifying your priorities beforehand and weighing the pros and cons of each option.

Think about how much time you want to spend in school and how much money you want to spend paying back student loans. If the cost is especially burdensome but the program has appeal, consider whether working part-time while in school might be an option–or if less expensive alternatives would still get you where you need to go. (For many students in Texas, an associate degree or RN license might be enough.) Consider too what kind of lifestyle works for you; for example: Do you want a small town? A big city? Is proximity important? Would moving closer to grandparents or family friends make things easier for everyone? What type of environment will give your kids (if applicable) a good start? If these things matter more than anything else on this list—and they should if they’re applicable—then adjust your plans accordingly instead of focusing on the prestige or connections at a certain school.
