Eric W. Kaler is the current president of the University of Minnesota. He assumed office on July 1, 2011, succeeding Robert Bruininks who retired after 26 years as president. Prior to becoming president at the U of M, Kaler served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Carnegie Mellon University from 2007 to 2011. He holds a BS degree in chemical engineering from California Institute of Technology and an MS degree (1981) and PhD (1984) from the University of Delaware where he was also an assistant professor before joining Carnegie Mellon as associate professor in 1986.

Prior to his service at Carnegie Mellon, Dr. Kaler spent more than 20 years at the University of Minnesota in various teaching and research positions including professor of chemical engineering (1987-1997), head of chemical engineering (1990-1994), associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Science and Engineering (1996-1997) and head of chemical engineering (1994-1996).
