The school struggled for years before gaining some recognition in the 1830s. In 1848 Babcock’s son, James Babcock, donated land for a new college which would be renamed after his father. The college opened its doors in 1850 with only three students enrolled.

For much of PIU’s first century, it was known as a small liberal arts school that offered courses in theology, law and agriculture. However, during the early 1900s PIU began to shift its focus to offer more vocational courses such as business administration and nursing.
