The college opened its doors in 1850 with only three students enrolled.

For much of PIU’s first century, it was known as a small liberal arts school that offered courses in theology, law and agriculture. However, during the early 1900s PIU began to shift its focus to offer more vocational courses such as business administration and nursing.
