There is a lot going on in football right now. With the NFL Draft and free agency, there is plenty to discuss with regard to quarterbacks. One group that has been largely ignored are black quarterbacks at Quarterback University Of Alabama. But what do we know about them? Here’s a closer look:
- Mac Jones (2020)
- Paul Tyson (2021)3) Layne Hatcher (2020)4) Bryce Young(2020).

Mac Jones
If you’re a fan of pro-style quarterbacks, then this player is one to watch. Mac Jones was the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2019 and committed to Alabama on June 14, 2018. He was ranked as the No. 31 overall player in his recruiting class by 247Sports Composite Rankings and had offers from Clemson, Georgia and LSU among others.
When Jones arrived on campus he had big shoes to fill as he competed against three other quarterbacks for playing time; Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and Jake Coker all had been starters during their careers at Alabama before him so there was no guarantee that he would be able to claim a spot as second string or even third string behind them.
In his first season with Alabama he did not get much playing time under center but did see some action late in games when Hurts would come out for rest purposes or for injury reasons (for example during their game against Notre Dame where Hurts left after getting hit hard).
Paul Tyson
Paul Tyson is a freshman quarterback at the University of Alabama. He’s the son of former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, who played for the Crimson Tide from 2008-2010 and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011.
Tyson is a pro-style passer but can also run if he needs to. He has a strong arm, which makes him effective against zone coverage.
He attended high school in Hoover, Alabama, about 20 minutes northeast of Tuscaloosa. Tyson enrolled at UA last spring and participated in spring practice before taking part in summer workouts with his teammates this year as well as players from other sports such as baseball and women’s softball teams (both teams have been national champions).
Layne Hatcher
Layne Hatcher is a quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He is a freshman and was a five-star recruit coming out of Allen, Texas. He was the number one ranked quarterback in the country in his class.
Bryce Young
Bryce Young is a freshman quarterback at the University of Alabama. He has been able to compete with national quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and Mac Jones.
Bryce Young has shown that he is one of the best freshmen quarterbacks in the country.
He threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another in Alabama’s 40-14 win over Colorado State on Saturday night.

One of the most important positions in football is quarterback. The QB has the ball almost every play, and it’s his job to lead their team to success. Over at Quarterback University Of Alabama, they’re getting ready for their next semester with a few new players on the roster.
- Mac Jones: A redshirt junior who was named a team captain before the start of last season, Mac Jones is back in Tuscaloosa after deciding not to transfer after being buried behind Jalen Hurts on Bama’s depth chart last year. He’ll be competing with both Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa again this year for playing time under center for Nick Saban’s squad.* Paul Tyson: After graduating from Hewitt-Trussville High School (Ala.), Tyson signed with Alabama as part of its 2020 recruiting class over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and many others. He enrolled early ahead of spring practice.* Layne Hatcher: A four-star recruit out of Memphis (Tenn.) University School who originally committed to Florida State before flipping his pledge to Alabama after visiting Tuscaloosa repeatedly throughout his senior year.* Bryce Young: Young was a consensus five-star prospect coming out of high school in 2020; he chose Alabama over offers from Auburn and Tennessee among other schools despite having spent much time growing up with current Vols QB Jarrett Guarantano growing up together in Knoxville
